Re:

Will Tesla Insurance Rates Skyrocket Because of Vandalism? What Owners Need to Know

Tesla has not attributed its reported California rate increase to vandalism. Here’s what the available figures mean, what can affect a Tesla policy, and how to investigate a renewal jump.

There is no evidence that Tesla insurance premiums are set to skyrocket because of vandalism. Tesla reports a 12.4% general rate increase approved in California for policies effective on or after August 11, 2025, but it does not attribute that increase to vandalism. A separate report of rising premiums written by Tesla’s insurance business is not a measure of any one driver’s price.

What the evidence says about vandalism and Tesla insurance

Vandalism can lead to an insurance claim, but the available sources do not provide a Tesla-specific vandalism claim count, loss-cost analysis, or rate filing that isolates vandalism’s effect on premiums. A future effect is possible in principle if claims change an insurer’s costs, but a price increase caused by vandalism is not established.

Tesla’s claims guidance says an owner may file a glass-only claim if vehicle glass is damaged by vandalism. That is not a guarantee that every vandalism loss is covered under every policy. Check the policy’s coverage terms and deductible. Tesla’s claim instructions explain how to submit a claim.

Two reported figures that do not prove a vandalism surcharge

Figure What it measures What it does not establish
12.4% Tesla says California regulators approved a general Tesla Insurance rate increase for policies effective on or after August 11, 2025. Tesla’s coverage page does not say vandalism caused the increase, and the figure is not a forecast of every customer’s renewal change. Tesla Insurance coverages
40.7% S&P Global Market Intelligence reported that Tesla’s total direct premiums written rose to $1.37 billion in 2025 from $970.8 million in 2024. It described the growth as driven by a shift toward direct underwriting and substantial growth in California. This is premium volume for Tesla’s insurance business, not a 40.7% increase in an individual policyholder’s premium; it does not isolate vandalism. S&P Global’s report

What can affect the price of a Tesla policy?

Tesla says premiums may depend on the vehicle, garaging address, mileage, selected coverage, and—in states where applicable—the vehicle’s monthly Safety Score and use of Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Model, trim, and model year can also affect repair costs or the vehicle’s total value. Tesla’s Real-Time Insurance page says its premium is determined by actual driving behaviors rather than factors outside drivers’ control, but that statement describes that product, not every Tesla policy in every state.

Real-Time Insurance is not available in California, and Tesla says its California product does not use Safety Score to determine the monthly premium. Tesla lists insurance availability by state, but availability and terms can change; check Tesla’s current insurance information before relying on a state listing.

For EVs more generally, the NAIC notes that repair-shop availability, repair complexity, parts and battery costs, and other factors may affect underwriting or claims costs. Those are broad EV considerations, not evidence of a Tesla vandalism surcharge. The NAIC’s EV insurance overview provides additional context.

How to find out why your renewal changed

  1. Read the renewal offer and declarations. Note the old and new premium, policy term, coverages, limits, deductibles, and listed discounts.
  2. Check what changed about the insured risk. Confirm the garaging address, drivers, vehicle configuration, estimated mileage, and—if your policy uses it—any telematics score or driving information.
  3. Ask the insurer for the specific rating factors behind the change. Do not assume vandalism caused your increase unless the insurer can substantiate that explanation for your policy.
  4. Compare like-for-like quotes. Use the same drivers, garaging ZIP code, vehicle, policy dates, liability limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, and optional rental or roadside coverage. Where reliable local information is available, also compare claims handling and repair-network arrangements.

California’s Department of Insurance explains that premiums are based on filed rates and characteristics of the insured risk. Its premium comparison guidance is relevant to California consumers; rules and rate details can differ elsewhere. Tesla says owners can use its app to get a quote, buy and manage a policy, and submit a claim.
