The Nintendo Switch 2 now has a U.S. suggested retail price of $499.99 before tax, up $50 from $449.99. The new price took effect September 1, 2026. Tariffs are part of the cost pressures Nintendo says it tracks, but the company has not said they alone caused the increase.
How much does the Nintendo Switch 2 cost in the U.S. now?
Nintendo’s U.S. suggested retail price rose from $449.99 to $499.99, excluding tax, effective September 1, 2026. The change was announced May 8. That is a $50 increase to the manufacturer’s suggested price, not a guarantee that every retailer charges the same amount. Did tariffs cause Nintendo’s price increase?
Nintendo has not attributed the $50 U.S. increase to tariffs alone. In its May 2026 announcement, the company cited changes in market conditions and the global business outlook. In its financial-results Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said, “This change in hardware pricing was not due to any one specific factor.” Nintendo discussed memory and other component costs, exchange-rate trends, oil prices, and tariffs as factors affecting its outlook. Tariffs are in Nintendo’s cost outlook, but their share is undisclosed
Nintendo said its fiscal-year forecast factored in approximately 100 billion yen associated with component-price increases, particularly memory chips, and tariff impacts. The company did not break out how much of that amount represents tariffs, nor did it identify what share, if any, explains the U.S. console price revision. The figure is a combined forecast cost impact, not a tariff charge on each console. Nintendo’s May 2026 Q&A

Nintendo’s stated policy is to treat tariffs as part of cost when they are imposed. In its May 2025 financial-results Q&A, Furukawa said: “Our basic policy is that for any country or region, if tariffs are imposed, we recognize them as a part of the cost and incorporate them into the price.” That explains why tariffs can influence pricing decisions, but it does not establish that a particular tariff produced this specific $50 increase. Why the tariff rate on a Switch 2 is not straightforward
A tariff rate quoted for a country or for a broad product category cannot automatically be applied to a finished console. The applicable duty depends on the product’s tariff classification, country of origin, and the rules in force when it is imported.

Nintendo’s May 2025 briefing gave tariff assumptions of 10% for products produced in Japan, Vietnam, and Cambodia and 145% for China, under the conditions then in effect. Nintendo said North American hardware was mainly produced in Vietnam and that its hardware was produced in China, Vietnam, and Cambodia. These were dated assumptions, not a current tariff schedule or a confirmed sourcing breakdown for U.S.-bound Switch 2 units. Nintendo’s May 2025 Q&A
A January 2026 White House proclamation set a 25% duty on defined semiconductor products, subject to exceptions that include certain non-data-center consumer applications. The proclamation alone does not show that a finished Switch 2 console falls within the covered products. Applying that rate to the console without confirming its classification and the relevant provision would be unwarranted. White House proclamation

The U.S. International Trade Commission directs importers to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule for classifications; Revision 20 of the 2026 schedule was published September 28, 2026. A precise current duty determination requires the console’s HTS classification, origin, and the provisions effective on the import date. Those product-specific details are not established here. Prices across countries are not directly comparable unless the currency, console version, tax treatment, and effective date match. Nintendo’s May 2026 announcement listed these changes:
| Market and system | Before | After | Effective date and qualification |
| United States | $449.99 | $499.99 | September 1, 2026; U.S. suggested retail price, tax excluded |
| Japan, Japanese-language system | ¥49,980 | ¥59,980 | May 25, 2026; Japanese-language system |
| Japan, multi-language system | Not stated | Unchanged | Sold through My Nintendo Store; announcement did not give a revised price |
Nintendo’s announcement also set September 1, 2026 as the effective date for the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The figures above do not establish a like-for-like comparison with European pricing: Nintendo’s listed European price includes tax and is through My Nintendo Store. Nintendo’s price announcement
Quick Recap
What Switch 2 buyers should take from the increase
- For U.S. budgeting, use $499.99 as Nintendo’s MSRP before tax from September 1, 2026, then confirm the retailer’s price and checkout total.
- It is accurate to say tariffs are among the pressures Nintendo includes in its cost outlook. It is not established that tariffs alone, or any specific tariff rate, caused the $50 increase.
- Historical tariff assumptions and broad semiconductor measures do not substitute for the console’s current classification and country of origin.
