Sometimes—but only when the specific promotion says so. T-Mobile’s standard guidance says a screen-damaged phone may receive partial trade-in value but generally does not qualify for promotions. Separate, offer-specific terms can accept a phone “in any condition.” AT&T also advertises an any-condition requirement for a particular iPhone upgrade offer, while Verizon describes a condition review and confirms final value after receiving the device. None of those rules means every broken phone qualifies for every carrier promotion or for its maximum advertised credit.
What “broken phone” means to a trade-in offer
Carriers do not treat every damaged phone as the same kind of trade-in. A cracked display, a phone that will not turn on, liquid damage, and battery damage can each affect eligibility or value. The decisive question is not simply whether the phone is broken: it is whether the exact offer accepts that model in that condition.
Also distinguish a carrier’s general trade-in rules from an individual promotion. T-Mobile’s general guidance and its offer-specific “any condition” wording can point to different outcomes because the promotion has its own terms. A condition estimate or ordinary trade-in value is not proof that the device meets a separate promotion’s requirements.
How the carriers’ broken-phone rules compare
| Carrier | What its official information says | What to verify before trading in |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | Its general support guidance says screen-damaged phones may receive partial value but do not qualify for promotions. Separate, selected offer pages use “any condition” language. | The exact offer, eligible phone model, condition exceptions, qualifying plan, account requirements, purchase channel, and credit terms. |
| AT&T | Its upgrade page advertises an any-condition requirement for a specific iPhone offer. Other offers on that page have different eligibility rules. | Whether the offer covers your particular model and damage, and whether its plan and upgrade conditions apply. |
| Verizon | Its terms assess whether the device powers on, has battery damage, and has front- or back-screen cracks. Final value is confirmed after the device is received and validated. | The offer’s condition rules, shipping or in-store process, submission deadline, and how the final value is applied. |
These are offer-specific rules, not a reliable apples-to-apples ranking. The official pages do not establish one current comparable credit amount for the same damaged handset across all three carriers. Their offers, eligible devices, plans, and deadlines change, so compare the live terms rather than headline maximums.

What T-Mobile’s “any condition” wording does—and does not—mean
General trade-in guidance
T-Mobile says damaged JUMP! and trade-in devices may be assessed at a lower value or require a fee, depending on the program. Its support guidance says screen-damaged trade-ins may receive partial value but do not qualify for promotions. Its trade-in page asks about display damage, liquid damage, and whether the phone powers on and stays on when estimating value.
Promotion-specific eligibility
Selected T-Mobile promotions use the phrase “in any condition.” That wording applies to the offer that contains it; it does not erase the general guidance or make every damaged phone eligible. Check the T-Mobile offers page and the full offer details for the live promotion, eligible models, exclusions, and conditions. A past or archived offer is not evidence that the same deal is still available.

Credits are not necessarily an instant discount
T-Mobile’s cited offer terms describe monthly bill credits and include conditions tied to qualifying service, account status, and early payoff or cancellation. Read the full terms to understand when credits start, how long they continue, and what happens if you pay off the device or cancel service early. The advertised maximum is not automatically the amount you will receive for a particular broken phone.
What to check with AT&T and Verizon
AT&T: confirm the specific iPhone offer
AT&T’s phone-upgrade page currently lists a specific iPhone offer with an any-condition trade-in requirement alongside offers with different requirements. Treat that as an offer-specific example, not a blanket policy for all AT&T trade-ins or all devices. Confirm the eligible model, plan, and upgrade conditions shown with the offer you intend to use.

Verizon: expect a condition review after submission
Verizon’s trade-in terms include whether the device powers on, battery damage such as swelling or leaking, and cracks to the front or back screen. Verizon says it confirms final value after receiving and validating the device’s identity and condition, so an initial estimate may not be the final value. Its consumer trade-in page says online submissions should be mailed within 30 days and credit is applied after receipt; check the deadline and process for the specific offer.

Compare what you are likely to pay and receive over the full offer period, not just the maximum trade-in figure. A promotion with a larger advertised credit can have a longer credit schedule or different plan requirements than another offer.

Before you send in a damaged phone
- Identify the exact device. Record the model and variant, then check that it appears in the offer’s eligible-device list.
- Answer condition questions honestly. Note cracks, liquid exposure, battery damage, and whether the phone powers on and stays on. Do not assume “any condition” covers an excluded model or overrides other offer terms.
- Save the live offer terms. Keep a copy or screenshot showing the offer date, condition language, required plan, purchase channel, credit schedule, and early cancellation or payoff rules.
- Document the phone before shipment. Photograph its front, back, and visible damage, and keep the trade-in submission or mailing receipt.
- Track the appraisal and credits. Check the carrier’s receipt and valuation, then review your bill for the expected credits. Contact the carrier promptly if the final assessment differs from the stated offer terms.
