Korean Air has not announced a plan to retire its Airbus A220s after merging with Asiana Airlines. Its published fleet-modernization language refers generally to phasing out older aircraft but does not name the A220. The available official merger material describes integration of aircraft and operations without stating whether Korean Air will retain, transfer or retire the type.
Has Korean Air announced an A220 retirement plan?
No A220-specific retirement decision or timetable appears in the cited Korean Air disclosures. The merger announcement and integration FAQ discuss combining aircraft, safety systems and airline infrastructure, but they do not provide a type-by-type fleet plan.
Korean Air’s September 2025 offering circular said the airline intended to modernize its fleet by phasing out older aircraft and building a core fleet of fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly aircraft. That is a general policy statement; it does not identify the A220 as an aircraft to be phased out. Korean Air’s 2025 offering circular
What is known about Korean Air’s A220 fleet?
Korean Air reported 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft in its passenger fleet as of June 30, 2025. That figure is a dated snapshot, not confirmation of the current fleet count or the post-merger plan. The circular provided no A220 retirement date or target fleet size.

What does the Asiana merger mean for the fleet?
Korean Air’s May 2026 announcement says Asiana’s assets, liabilities, rights, obligations and employees will transfer to Korean Air. It also describes integrating Asiana’s aircraft and safety systems into Korean Air’s operating system. The company’s merger FAQ anticipates integration of maintenance, ground handling, catering and other infrastructure, and refers to building an integrated fleet. None of this specifies the A220’s fate. Korean Air merger announcement · Korean Air merger FAQ
When is the merger and operational integration planned?
The dates describe separate steps. Korean Air identifies December 16, 2026 as the statutory merger date, while the planned operational launch under the Korean Air brand is December 17, 2026. The launch plan is subject to required approvals and statutory procedures. South Korea’s transport ministry likewise described December 17 as the planned integration date. What could determine whether the A220 remains?
Korean Air has not published its A220-specific decision criteria. In general, an airline weighing whether to keep a fleet type may consider fleet commonality, aircraft age and operating economics, route capacity requirements, and the maintenance and training resources needed to support it. These are possible industry considerations, not criteria Korean Air has confirmed for its A220s.
Until Korean Air publishes a type-specific fleet plan, neither the general modernization goal nor the merger integration language establishes that the A220s will be retired—or that they will remain.
