The 2025 U.S.–South Korea trade deal was reported to cut the tariff on South Korean-made cars and parts from 25% to 15%. That may ease pressure on import costs, but it does not mean Hyundai or Kia prices automatically fell—or guarantee that they will stay flat. Hyundai said in April 2025 it would not raise U.S. prices “right now”; that was a time-limited statement, and it did not cover Kia. As of October 7, 2026, the sources available here do not establish whether a tariff-hike threat reported in January took effect or what rate currently applies.
What the tariff deal changed—and what it did not
South Korean government reporting said the deal would reduce tariffs on Korea-made cars and parts from 25% to 15%. The Federal Register implementation material describes a 15% combined-duty framework for covered South Korean goods when the otherwise applicable ordinary tariff is below 15%; where the ordinary rate is already 15% or higher, a different tariff heading applies. This is customs treatment, not a consumer rebate or a retail-price order. A tariff can affect a company’s costs, but the rate alone does not determine how much a particular vehicle costs at a dealership. The model’s final assembly origin, applicable customs treatment, manufacturer pricing, incentives, and dealer quote all matter. No verified average Hyundai or Kia retail-price change attributable to the deal is established here.
Will Hyundai prices go up because of tariffs?
On April 3, 2025, Hyundai Motor president José Muñoz said: “What I can tell you is that we are not going to increase prices right now.” The statement was about Hyundai and the immediate moment—not a permanent price freeze. Yonhap’s report provides the date and context.

That comment may have reassured shoppers facing uncertainty in spring 2025, but it cannot establish Hyundai’s pricing in October 2026. Nor does it show that prices decreased after the deal.
Will Kia prices go up?
Hyundai’s April 2025 comment was not a Kia pricing commitment. The tariff deal may affect import costs for covered South Korean-made vehicles and parts, but the available sources do not establish a Kia-specific price change or a current Kia price policy. Check the exact vehicle’s assembly origin and obtain a dated, written quote rather than assuming every Kia faces the same tariff exposure.

Why the tariff picture is not settled by the deal announcement
On January 26, 2026, the Associated Press reported that President Trump threatened to raise tariffs on South Korean autos and other goods amid a dispute over legislative approval. That report establishes the threat, not whether it later took effect. The sources available for this article do not verify the tariff rate in force on October 7, 2026. A separate White House proclamation dated July 20, 2026, concerns Canadian motor vehicles entering Canada and U.S. duties on certain Canadian goods; it does not establish the U.S. tariff on Korean-made Hyundai or Kia vehicles. The proclamation’s subject is Canadian trade.

Does Hyundai’s U.S. investment mean more cars are tariff-proof?
Hyundai Motor Group announced a $21 billion U.S. investment plan for 2025–2028. The company said $9 billion would support production capacity, with a target of annual capacity of 1.2 million vehicles across Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis; it also designated $6 billion for component localization and related supply-chain investments. These are company plans, not proof that every Hyundai or Kia sold in the United States is assembled domestically. Hyundai Motor Group’s announcement describes the investment.

- Identify the exact model and trim. Price and incentives can differ by configuration, so compare like with like.
- Check final assembly origin. Do not assume a vehicle’s exposure from its brand alone; confirm the origin for the specific vehicle with the dealer or manufacturer.
- Get current incentives and a written, dated quote. Compare the full out-the-door price, not just the advertised MSRP or a claim about tariffs.
- Ask whether the quote is firm and when it expires. A time-specific dealer offer is more useful for your decision than an old company statement about prices “right now.”
The White House’s April 2025 action addressed U.S. automobile and parts imports, but it does not supply a model-by-model consumer price comparison. Its scope is tariff policy, not a guarantee of what a dealer will charge.
