There is no promise that flight tickets will get cheaper during India’s 2026 festive season. On September 22, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said the government would not impose an airfare cap, but would advise airlines to keep fares reasonable. That is a call for restraint—not a guaranteed discount, price ceiling or prediction that fares will fall.
What did the minister say about festive-season airfares?
Naidu said the government would continue engaging with airlines and ask them to keep prices reasonable during the festive period. The Times of India reported that he made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of agreements for the next phase of the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, in response to a question about a fare cap.

In the newspaper’s transcription, Naidu said: “We engage with the airlines continuously; we also have regular meetings with them. And we definitely point it to them that during this festive season, you have to ensure that the fair prices are kept at a reasonable level so that the people who want to travel, especially in these important times, get to see the benefit,” The Times of India report published the wording as “fair prices.” The Indian Express also reported that the government would not impose a cap and that Naidu cited fuel costs as a source of fare pressure.

Why might fares still vary—or rise?
Airfares are not set by festive-season demand alone. The Ministry of Civil Aviation says traffic in India typically picks up in October as the festive period begins and demand diminishes by mid-January. It identifies seats already sold on a flight, prevailing fuel prices, aircraft capacity, competition on the route, seasonality, holidays, festivals, long weekends and events as factors that can affect fares. A December 14, 2023 ministry release describes these influences; a Lok Sabha written answer dated December 4, 2025 also names seat occupancy, fuel costs, aircraft capacity and seasonal fluctuations.
Those factors operate at both the broad seasonal level and the individual-flight level. A popular date may face strong demand, while a nearby date or another flight on the same route may have more seats available. More capacity can help accommodate a rush, but it does not by itself guarantee lower prices.

Fuel costs are one pressure, not a complete fare formula
The Times of India attributed to Naidu an estimate that aviation turbine fuel (ATF) accounts for around 40–43 per cent of airfares. Treat that as the minister’s reported estimate, not a fixed, independently established share for every airline, route or fare component. Fuel is one of several influences listed by the ministry and Parliament.

For the 2025 festive period, the Ministry of Civil Aviation reported that Air India and Air India Express planned approximately 486 additional flights across 20 sectors. That is historical context about capacity in 2025—not a 2026 schedule or evidence that fares this season will fall. The ministry’s October 5, 2025 review described that deployment.

How should you compare tickets before booking?
There is no route-level 2026 fare series or quantified forecast in the cited reporting that can establish whether a particular ticket will rise or fall. To assess the options available for your trip, compare offers on the same basis rather than focusing only on the headline fare:
- Date and time: Check nearby travel dates and departure times if your plans are flexible.
- Itinerary: Compare direct and connecting flights, including total journey time.
- Total cost: Check the payable amount, including baggage and any other services you select.
- Ticket conditions: Review change and cancellation terms before deciding.
- Available options: Consider the number of seats or flights offered on your chosen route and date.
These comparisons can help you judge the offers in front of you, but none guarantees a saving. The practical answer depends on the route, travel date, demand, available seats, fuel expense, competition and schedule.
