What is Columbia Bank’s headquarters today?
The answer depends on which entity you mean. Columbia Banking System, Inc.—the publicly traded parent company—identifies Tacoma, Washington, as its headquarters. Its 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 26, 2026, also describes a leased corporate headquarters at 13th & A Street in Tacoma. The filing is the company’s annual report for the year ended December 31, 2025.

Columbia Bank, the subsidiary bank, lists its headquarters in Lake Oswego, Oregon. The company’s newsroom distinguishes the two: Tacoma for the parent and Lake Oswego for the bank. So saying simply that “Columbia Bank is headquartered in Tacoma” can blur the corporate and bank designations.

What is changing in Arizona?
A Puget Sound Business Journal report published October 12, 2026, by Ryan Lambert, says Stein relocated to Arizona after selling his Auburn home. Columbia plans to open a 13,500-square-foot executive office near Scottsdale near the end of October 2026. Stein expects the office eventually to have as many as 50 employees; that is a projection, not a current headcount.

The report describes the Scottsdale-area site as an executive office, not a replacement headquarters. An executive’s home or a new office location does not, on its own, change the company’s stated headquarters.
Has Columbia decided to move its headquarters?
No decision or date for a headquarters move is described in the October 12 report. Stein told the Journal, “At some point, as a regional company, that probably will change.” He also said the prospect reflects where executives will spend their time: “It’s based on where our executives spend the majority of their time, which going forward is less and less in Tacoma.” Those remarks suggest a possible future change, not a formal announcement.

Why did Stein say he was moving?
Stein attributed the executive relocation in part to recent Washington tax increases. The Journal reported his estimate that those increases would cost the bank an additional $8 million per year. That figure is Stein’s estimate as reported by the newspaper, not an independently verified amount from the company’s filing.

He told the Journal: “We would move non-customer-facing administrative roles subject to the tax to other states, principally Idaho and Arizona.” That is a conditional statement about a possible future tax and potential staffing decisions; it is not confirmation that the company is moving its headquarters or leaving Washington.

Stein also expressed confidence in Columbia’s regional business, telling the Journal, “I’m very bullish on our ability to compete and continue to grow market share in the state of Washington and Oregon and Idaho, because there’s not another bank like us.” Columbia’s company overview describes its western footprint as more than 350 locations, but that footprint does not determine where the parent company is headquartered.
