Wiers Farm expanded a voluntary recall of vegetables that may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes; the FDA notice lists packaged items and bulk vegetables, with overlap between categories. A vegetable name alone does not establish that a product is affected.
Which vegetables were recalled?
Wiers Farm’s expanded recall covered products packed from July 5 through July 12, 2024. The FDA notice names Wiers Farm and Freshire Farms products. Packaged items included bagged poblano, cubanelle, green beans, salad cucumbers and serrano peppers; organic bell peppers, cucumbers, yellow squash and zucchini squash; and Freshire Farms green beans and jalapeños sold at select ALDI stores.
The notice’s separate bulk-product list includes Anaheim, cubanelle, habanero, Hungarian wax, jalapeño, poblano and serrano peppers; cilantro; whole and pickling cucumbers; green beans; green bell peppers; mustard greens; plain parsley; tomatillos; and mixed vegetable boxes sent to food banks in Cleveland and Youngstown, Ohio. Some vegetables appear in both packaged and bulk listings. The headline’s reference to 20 types should not be read as meaning every item in any one of these broad categories was recalled.
For exact product names, UPCs, pack dates, retailers and distribution states, use the FDA’s full recall notice. It identifies retailers and locations, including Walmart, Kroger, Save-a-Lot and other local stores. Match the details in the notice rather than relying only on a vegetable name or brand.

How did the recall expand?
The initial recall, announced July 12, 2024, involved whole cucumbers with a June 5 pack date and two-pound bags of salad cucumbers with June 5 or June 6 pack dates. According to the FDA-hosted announcement, the cucumbers were not grown or harvested by Wiers Farm; they were sourced out of state, then handled and distributed by the company. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development identified the potential contamination through routine sampling. The later expansion added the products listed above.
What should you do if you bought recalled produce?
- Compare the product with the FDA notice. Check the brand and product name, UPC where provided, pack date, packaging or bulk form, retailer and purchase or distribution location.
- Do not eat a product that matches. Follow the recall notice’s instructions for affected items; do not assume a product is safe simply because it is in a broad category that is not fully recalled.
- Contact a medical professional if symptoms develop after eating an affected item. The notice advises people who ate affected produce and develop fever, muscle aches or gastrointestinal symptoms to seek medical attention.
What was known about illnesses?
In its announcement hosted by FDA on July 22, 2024, Wiers Farm stated: “There have been no illnesses or consumer complaints reported to date.” That is a statement as of the company’s announcement, not a current illness count.
