Why You Should—and Should Not—Max Out Your 401(k)

Maxing out a 401(k) can build tax-advantaged retirement savings, but the right amount depends on your employer match, vesting, plan costs, cash needs and the 2026 contribution limits.

Maxing out your 401(k) can be a good way to build retirement savings, but it is not automatically the best use of every paycheck. Before increasing contributions, check how much you need to contribute to receive your full employer match, whether the plan’s fees and investment choices suit you, and whether you can afford to put more money beyond easy reach. For 2026, the standard employee contribution limit is $24,500, but that is a ceiling—not a target.

What “maxing out” your 401(k) means in 2026

For 2026, the IRS employee elective-deferral limit for a traditional or safe-harbor 401(k) is $24,500. This is the maximum an eligible employee may defer across applicable plans, not a required savings amount. Your plan may set a lower limit, and if you participate in more than one plan, you may need to combine your employee deferrals when checking the cap. See the IRS announcement of 2026 contribution limits and the IRS contribution guidance.

Eligible participants age 50 or older may have an additional $8,000 catch-up limit in 2026, if their plan allows it. Participants who attain age 60, 61, 62, or 63 during 2026 may have a higher catch-up limit of $11,250, also subject to plan rules and eligibility. These catch-up amounts are in addition to the regular employee limit.

The employee deferral limit is different from the overall annual-additions limit. For 2026, total additions to a participant’s account generally cannot exceed the lesser of $72,000 or 100% of compensation, before catch-up contributions. Employer matching and nonelective contributions count toward that overall limit. The IRS contribution guidance explains the distinction.

Why contributing more can make sense

You may receive more of the employer match

If your employer matches contributions, contributing enough under the plan’s formula may qualify you for the full match. The amount you must contribute, eligibility conditions, and timing rules vary by plan. The IRS says, “You may be walking away from free money by not contributing to your employer-sponsored retirement plan,” while directing participants to their plan documents for the terms. Read the IRS explanation of employer matching contributions and confirm the formula in your summary plan description (SPD).

A match is not necessarily yours to keep immediately. Your own elective deferrals are fully vested, but employer contributions in traditional plans may vest over time. Safe-harbor contributions generally must be fully vested when made. The IRS vesting guidance describes these distinctions. Check your plan’s schedule before counting the entire employer contribution as yours, particularly if you may leave the job before it vests.

More savings receive tax-favored treatment

Traditional pre-tax deferrals generally are not included in federal taxable income for the year you make them. Designated Roth deferrals are included in income for that year, and qualified distributions may receive favorable tax treatment. Both types count toward the employee elective-deferral limit. The choice changes when you pay tax; which approach is better depends on your circumstances. The IRS contribution guidance covers the tax treatment of traditional and Roth contributions.

Payroll contributions can make saving more straightforward

Increasing a payroll deferral can be a practical way to direct more earnings into retirement savings. That convenience does not remove the need to review the plan’s investment menu, fees, and other features. The Department of Labor’s Savings Fitness guide notes that plan fees and expenses reduce the retirement benefits participants ultimately receive when they direct investments.

Why maxing out may be the wrong move

It can leave too little money available now

A 401(k) is not a demand deposit account. Access to money is governed by plan terms and tax rules, so do not treat retirement contributions as cash you can freely retrieve for near-term expenses. If a larger deferral would leave you unable to cover your household’s current needs, the statutory maximum may not fit your budget.

The employer contribution may be subject to vesting

If you may change jobs before employer contributions vest, some or all of that match may not remain yours. Your own contributions remain fully vested; the employer portion follows the plan’s terms. Review the SPD and your expected time at the job before using the match as a reason to increase your deferral.

Fees and investment choices affect the value of the plan

Plans differ in fees, available investments, and other features. Compare the investment options and costs described in your plan materials before committing more of your savings to the account. A high contribution does not by itself make a plan’s investment menu or expenses suitable for you.

The IRS limit does not guarantee you can contribute that much

The 2026 employee limit is a federal ceiling. A lower plan limit, eligibility rules, nondiscrimination testing, or your own financial circumstances may constrain contributions. Catch-up contributions also depend on your age, eligibility, and whether the plan permits them.

How to decide how much to contribute

  1. Find your plan terms. Locate the SPD or other plan information and check the match formula, eligibility conditions, required deferral, vesting schedule, and any year-end true-up. A true-up can matter if you do not contribute evenly throughout the year, so confirm whether your plan offers one rather than assuming it does.
  2. Check plan costs and investments. Review the investment options, fees, and other features in the plan materials. These details affect what you receive from the account, not just how much you contribute.
  3. Decide between traditional and Roth deferrals, if both are available. Compare the tax timing: traditional deferrals generally exclude the contribution from federal taxable income in the contribution year, while Roth deferrals are included in income that year. Your tax situation determines which is more appropriate.
  4. Set a contribution amount your budget can sustain. Consider cash needs and other obligations before increasing payroll deductions. Do not assume that the statutory maximum is the right amount for you.
  5. Check the applicable limit and change the payroll election. Confirm your eligibility, age-based catch-up allowance, plan limits, and total deferrals across plans. Follow your employer or plan’s process for changing the election and check a later pay statement to verify that the new rate took effect.

The Department of Labor’s Savings Fitness guide puts the match-first consideration plainly: “If you can’t afford the maximum, try to contribute enough to maximize any employer matching funds.” Treat that as a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking your plan’s conditions, vesting, fees, and your household budget.
