In April 2024, Yahoo was reported to be ending original content production from its Singapore operation and shifting toward curation and syndicated material. The change was associated with reported cuts to editorial and social media roles in Singapore; it was not described as a company-wide end to original Yahoo News reporting.

What changed at Yahoo Singapore in April 2024?

The Edge Singapore reported on April 28, 2024, that 17 Singapore editorial and social media staff were expected to leave after May 7. According to that report, affected employees met with HR on April 23 and were told Yahoo would no longer create original content from Singapore. These staffing details were reported by news outlets, rather than announced in a Yahoo press release.

The same report said Yahoo planned to hire three curation editors and a market lead for Yahoo News Singapore. That points to a change in the local operating model: fewer roles creating original coverage from Singapore, and roles focused on selecting, packaging, and distributing material from other publishers.

Why was Yahoo moving toward curation and syndicated content?

The Business Times, relaying The Straits Times’ reporting, said Yahoo’s evaluation found that partner content had consistently driven engagement. This is a reported explanation, not a direct public statement from Yahoo establishing the full internal rationale.

The Business Times named HuffPost, AFP News, Reuters, EdgeProp, and The Edge Singapore among outlets contributing syndicated material. Syndication lets a publisher offer reporting produced elsewhere; curation involves choosing and presenting content for an audience. Neither term, by itself, establishes how much original reporting a site will publish or whether readers will see less coverage overall.

What did Yahoo say readers should expect?

A Yahoo spokesperson told The Straits Times that the editorial strategy was changing to align with Yahoo Singapore’s strategic priorities. The spokesperson said: “Readers can expect to continue seeing the content they most regularly engage with and enjoy. We remain focused on delivering a diverse selection of high-quality and engaging news, lifestyle and finance content, from local and international sources.”

The statement described Yahoo’s intended reader-facing offer, not a measured result. The reporting available at the time did not establish how the Singapore site’s content mix changed after the shift, whether the planned curation roles were ultimately filled, or what audience or business outcomes followed.

Was Yahoo ending original reporting everywhere?

No. The reported decision concerned Yahoo’s Singapore operation. The Business Times said the vast majority of Yahoo News sites would continue to use a blend of third-party and original content, and reported that Yahoo would continue investing in Asia. The Singapore change should not be generalized into a global end to Yahoo original journalism.

How does the 2024 change differ from Yahoo’s 2022 restructuring?

Yahoo had made a separate change to its Southeast Asian editorial operation in 2022. CNA, carrying a TODAY report, said seven Singapore-based employees—all journalists, according to the report’s sources—were laid off. They came from the Singapore/Malaysia, Philippines, and finance teams. The coverage also said Yahoo had stopped publishing localized content in the Philippines and Indonesia.

At the time, a Yahoo spokesperson described the 2022 restructuring as “purely a strategic decision” and said Singapore and Malaysia teams producing localized content would continue providing news reporting and lifestyle content. That earlier restructuring is distinct from the 2024 report that Yahoo would stop creating original content from Singapore.

Where does Artifact fit into the story?

Marketing-Interactive linked the timing of the Singapore shift with Yahoo’s acquisition of Artifact, an AI-powered news aggregation and discovery platform created by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It reported that Artifact would stop operating as a standalone app, with its personalization technology and other features to be integrated across Yahoo, including its News app.

This is adjacent strategic context, not evidence that Artifact caused the Singapore staff cuts. The reports do not establish a causal link between the acquisition and the local restructuring.
