Reuters reported that Tesla dismissed Supercharger chief Rebecca Tinucci after she resisted Elon Musk’s push for deeper cuts to the charging group. That account came from former employees who relayed what they had heard about a private meeting—not from on-record confirmation by Musk or Tinucci. Tesla also dismissed roughly 500 members of the charging team in late April 2024.
Why was Tesla Supercharger chief Rebecca Tinucci fired?
Reuters reported that Tinucci had already reduced the charging group’s staff by 15% to 20% about two weeks before the final layoffs, as part of broader company cuts. According to Reuters’ sources, Musk wanted further reductions and Tinucci argued that deeper cuts would undermine the charging business. Reuters said its account of the private meeting came from four former charging-network employees who relayed what they had heard from Supercharger managers; Musk and Tinucci did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. Reuters’ May 15, 2024 report therefore describes a reported motive, not a publicly confirmed explanation.
Did she challenge Elon Musk over layoffs?
That is what Reuters’ account says: Tinucci reportedly opposed further cuts after the initial reduction. The sequence reported by Reuters was an earlier 15% to 20% staffing cut, a disagreement over additional reductions, and then the dismissal of Tinucci and the roughly 500-person charging group. The specific exchange and its role in the decision have not been confirmed publicly by Tesla, Musk, or Tinucci.
What happened to Tesla’s charging team?
The Associated Press reported that charging-team leaders said they were told on April 29, 2024, that the group of about 500 had been eliminated. The decision created uncertainty about support for integrating other automakers’ electric vehicles with Tesla’s charging network. General Motors told the AP, “We are continuing to monitor the situation regarding changes to the Supercharger team and the potential impacts.” That was a statement of concern, not confirmation that integration or network operations had stopped. The AP’s May 2024 report also quoted analyst Sam Abuelsamid’s view that staff are needed to keep hardware operating and software integration working; that was his assessment of the risks.

Contractors and construction
Reuters reported that contractors and utilities had invested in equipment and infrastructure for Tesla projects. In a letter to contractors, a Tesla global-supply manager instructed them to hold off breaking ground on newly awarded projects and pause materials purchases. Reuters also reported that Tesla’s energy team was assigned aspects of Supercharger work. These reports point to project disruption and a change in who handled some work, not proof that all construction or network activity ended. Reuters reported the vendor instructions and staffing change.
What did Musk say Tesla would do with the Supercharger network?
On April 30, 2024, Musk wrote on X that Tesla still planned to add to the network, “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations,” according to the AP. The statement indicated a shift in emphasis, not an announcement that the network would be abandoned. The AP reported Musk’s post and the company’s public response.

How did automakers and partners respond?
Ford spokesperson Marty Günsberg told Axios, “Ford’s plans for our customers do not change.” Toyota spokesperson Scott Vazin told Axios the cuts “was news to us when we read it online,” adding that the company was “trying to gain more insight.” Those were contemporaneous reactions and do not establish what either automaker later implemented. Axios reported the partner responses.

In June 2025, The Atlantic reported that many Supercharger employees had been rehired, that Tinucci had left Tesla, and that she was overseeing Uber’s shift to electric vehicles at that time. That reporting does not establish her current role or Tesla’s current charging-team staffing. The Atlantic’s June 2025 account is a dated update, not a current staffing count.
