But “security” should be treated as a question to investigate, not a proven reason to choose the city. Available evidence here does not establish that Venice is safer than comparable places or resolve the flood exposure, insurance costs, or healthcare access of any particular address.
Why Venice appeals to retirees
An older community
U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts estimates that 61.4% of Venice residents were 65 or older in 2020–2024. The city’s estimated population was 30,477 in July 2025. Those citywide figures indicate a substantial older-adult population, but they do not guarantee that an individual will find a suitable social circle, services, or support nearby. Beaches, trails, and downtown life
VISIT FLORIDA describes 14 miles of beaches, a 700-foot fishing pier, shark-tooth hunting, cycling, reef diving, and attractions including museums, arts, theater, and parks. These are destination features, not a promise of particular weather or a fit for every resident. VISIT FLORIDA’s Venice guide
Visit Venice FL describes the historic downtown as less than a mile from Venice Beach, with walking and biking routes, restaurants, boutiques, a Saturday farmers market, and community events. These descriptions come from local tourism organizations rather than an independent assessment of year-round convenience. Visit Venice FL: Explore Downtown

What housing costs look like—and what the figures leave out
The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 estimates offer broad benchmarks for Venice, not quotes for a specific home or rental:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
| Measure | Venice estimate | Period and source |
|---|---|---|
| Median value of owner-occupied homes | $434,700 | 2020–2024, U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts |
| Median gross rent | $1,606 per month | 2020–2024, U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts |
| Median monthly owner costs with a mortgage | $2,238 | 2020–2024, U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts |
| Median monthly owner costs without a mortgage | $917 | 2020–2024, U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts |
These citywide measures do not tell you what a particular property will cost to insure, maintain, or own after taxes and storm-related considerations. Condition and location also matter. Build a budget from an actual property, its carrying costs, and current insurance quotes rather than treating a median as a personal estimate. U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts
Growth is a reason to check fit, not a forecast
The City of Venice’s FY2024 financial report records population growth from 21,418 in 2015 to 28,967 in 2024, an average annual increase of 3.1% across that period. The report attributes growth more to migration than to births and deaths. Those are historical figures, not a projection of future growth or a measure of how a particular neighborhood may change.
Rank #3
The same report records assessed property valuations rising from $3.0 billion in 2015 to $6.6 billion in 2024, an average annual increase of 8.1%. That is the city’s aggregate assessed valuation, not evidence that an individual home appreciated at that rate. The report describes the local economy as a mix of tourism and retirement, services, light manufacturing, and construction; its view that retirees provide economic stability is the city’s own analysis. What “security” does—and does not—mean here
Crime and personal safety
The available city material describes the police department’s staffing and functions, but does not provide current crime counts, rates, or comparable neighborhood-level data. Older promotional safety rankings do not establish how Venice compares today. A fair comparison would need the same data years, offense definitions, geographic boundaries, and per-capita method for Venice and the other places under consideration.
Rank #4
Flood, storm, and insurance exposure
No address-level flood or storm-surge assessment, current homeowners-insurance premium, or insurer-availability information is established here. Coastal appeal is not evidence of low hazard exposure. Before committing to a property, check current official hazard information for the exact address, understand evacuation context, and obtain actual insurance quotes; conditions can differ from one property to another.

The Census Bureau reports $804.586 million in Venice health-care and social-assistance receipts or revenue in 2022. That is an aggregate economic measure, not evidence of clinical capacity, quality, appointment availability, Medicare participation, or access to a needed specialty. Identify the clinicians and services you expect to use, confirm they accept your coverage, and check travel distance and appointment access directly. U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts

A practical way to decide whether Venice fits
- Set a full housing budget. Compare a specific home or rental, including taxes, insurance, maintenance, and relevant hazard-related costs—not only citywide medians.
- Compare safety on like terms. Look for recent crime data using consistent years, offense categories, boundaries, and per-capita calculations for each place you are considering.
- Check the exact property’s hazards and coverage. Review current official flood and storm information, evacuation context, and real insurance quotes before purchase.
- Confirm healthcare around your needs. Contact relevant providers and insurers about specialties, Medicare participation, appointment access, and travel time.
- Test your daily-life fit. Visit the neighborhoods you are considering and assess access to the beach, trails, downtown services, recreation, and facilities that matter to you.
- Put the city’s demographics in context. Venice’s older-adult share may be a useful starting point, but consider whether the community, services, and pace suit your own plans.
The City of Venice FY2024 financial report says, “The combination of cultural and recreational facilities, together with the continuing expansion of programs and facilities makes Venice and Sarasota County ideal retirement areas.” That is the municipality’s characterization, not an independent ranking or a finding about safety.
