What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Slower inflation does not mean grocery prices have gone back down. It means prices are rising more slowly—or, in some months, holding steady—after earlier increases. In the latest U.S. city-average CPI-U figures here, food-at-home prices were 2.2% higher in August 2026 than a year earlier, while the seasonally adjusted index was unchanged from July. Your own bill can still feel especially high if the foods you buy have risen faster than the overall average.
What “slowing inflation” means at the grocery store
Inflation measures the rate at which prices change, not whether prices have returned to an earlier level. If a price rises and then stops rising, it remains at the higher level unless it falls. If it continues to rise more slowly, the gap from the earlier price can keep growing, just at a slower pace.
That distinction appears in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ CPI-U data for food at home. In August 2026, the index was 2.2% above August 2025. From July to August 2026, it was unchanged on a seasonally adjusted basis. A flat month does not undo increases from previous months or years. BLS, CPI-U detailed expenditure categories, August 2026.
Why your grocery basket may not match the average
The food-at-home CPI is an average across grocery categories; it is not a calculation of any one household’s shopping list. The same August 2026 BLS table shows that individual food categories can move differently. When some categories rise more quickly than the overall measure, a household that buys a lot of those items may experience a larger increase. A household buying a different mix may see a smaller increase—or declines in some items. The overall figure cannot tell you which experience applies without knowing your purchases.

Grocery inflation and restaurant inflation are not the same
Food bought for home consumption and food purchased away from home are separate CPI measures. In the BLS’s annual review, food-at-home prices rose 2.4% from December 2024 to December 2025, while food-away-from-home prices rose 4.1% over the same period. These are year-over-year price changes for different categories, not a comparison of any one grocery trip with a restaurant meal. BLS, Consumer Price Index: 2025 in review.
Why grocery spending figures can tell a different story
Household spending is not a pure measure of prices. It changes with both prices and the amount or mix of food people buy. BLS reported that average food-at-home expenditures rose 2.8% in 2024, while spending on fruits and vegetables fell 3.5% and spending on cereals and bakery products fell 6.1%. Those expenditure changes do not mean prices in those sections fell by the same amounts; they may also reflect changes in quantities or choices. BLS, Consumer expenditures in 2024.

How to make the numbers useful for your budget
- Compare like with like. When checking a price change, compare the same product and package size, and note the dates. A different size or brand can make the comparison misleading.
- Separate prices from your total bill. Your bill can change because prices changed, because you bought more or less, or because your mix shifted. A monthly total alone does not identify the cause.
- Track the categories that matter to you. A national average can put broad price movement in context, but a short list of regularly purchased items is more relevant to your household budget.
- Use CPI as context, not a personal forecast. The U.S. city-average CPI-U describes an aggregate index, not the prices at a particular store or the inflation rate for an individual household.
