These were historical market snapshots, not live prices for October 7.
How far did the euro fall?
Reuters reported that the euro touched a 17-month low and was last down 0.35% at $1.1291 on October 1. It had also declined nearly 2.5% in September, its largest monthly fall since July 2025. Those figures describe the levels and performance cited in that dated report; they are not current exchange-rate quotes. Reuters
Why were energy costs a concern for the euro?
Europe’s exposure to imported energy can make higher oil and energy costs an economic double hit: they can add to inflation while raising costs for households and businesses and weighing on growth. Reuters reported that this growth risk was one factor pressuring the euro, even as rate hikes were expected. As Rabobank head of FX strategy Jane Foley put it, “This growth risk has been hanging over the euro,” Reuters reported. Reuters
This is a risk channel, not proof that one oil-price move alone caused the currency’s decline. The reporting described several pressures operating at the same time and did not quantify how much each contributed.

Why did U.S. yields matter?
Higher U.S. Treasury yields can make dollar-denominated assets more attractive relative to alternatives, supporting the dollar and putting pressure on the euro-dollar exchange rate. Reuters quoted National Australia Bank head of FX strategy Ray Attrill: “The US dollar seems to be showing more sensitivity, just at the moment, to what’s happening with say, 10-year Treasuries, than it is on pricing for when the next Fed rate hike might come,” Reuters.
What did rising French yields signal?
French borrowing costs rose amid concern about the country’s public finances and political uncertainty. Reuters reported that French debt yields reached another 14-year high. The French-German 10-year yield spread—the difference between the yields investors demand on French and German government bonds—was reported by The Economic Times, summarizing Reuters, at 127.51 basis points after widening to 128.80 basis points earlier in the session. The earlier level was reported as the highest since June 2012. Reuters The Economic Times

The spread is one measure of the extra yield investors demand to hold French debt rather than German debt. It reflects France-specific fiscal and political risk alongside wider movements in rates and inflation expectations; it is not, by itself, proof of a French debt crisis.
Did oil prices rise throughout October 1?
No. The headline captures the broader concern about higher oil and energy costs, but it should not be read as saying oil rose on every relevant market interval. The Economic Times’ October 1 report said oil prices fell that Thursday after Gulf crude exports recovered and an unexpected increase in U.S. inventories eased immediate supply concerns. The report’s account of a same-day decline is compatible with oil having been a broader source of inflation and growth concern; the direction depends on the period being compared. The Economic Times

What the market move does—and does not—show
- Energy and growth: Higher energy costs can raise inflation while threatening purchasing power and business activity in an energy-importing region.
- Relative yields and the dollar: Reuters cited elevated U.S. Treasury yields as support for the dollar.
- France-specific risk: French fiscal and political concerns coincided with higher French yields and a wider French-German spread.
The October 1 reports identify these as concurrent influences, not a ranked or quantified breakdown of the euro’s move. The quoted exchange rate, bond yields and spread are dated report figures, not official time-series data or October 7 market levels.
