The Big Bang Theory’s often-cited $9 million-per-episode cost was a reported estimate for the sitcom’s later run—not a verified figure for every episode from 2007 to 2019. The clearest explanation in a 2016 report by Variety journalist Cynthia Littleton is that more than half of the estimate went to actor salaries, led by the show’s highest-paid stars.
What the $9 million figure means
On October 4, 2016, Fox News published Variety reporter Cynthia Littleton’s account that production had risen to around $9 million an episode. Littleton wrote: “Meanwhile, the cost of producing ‘Big Bang’ has skyrocketed to around $9 million an episode — more than half of which is actor salaries.” Read the report.
This is a contemporaneous reported estimate, not an audited production budget. A later retrospective describes the approximate figure as applying to seasons 8–12, rather than the show’s entire 12-season run. The available accounts do not establish a precise cost for each season or episode. Work & Money’s retrospective.
Why cast salaries drove the cost
The 2016 report said Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco were earning $1 million per episode under a 2014 deal covering three years of 24-episode seasons. Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar were reported at around $900,000 per episode that season. Those figures illustrate the scale of the salaries; they are period-specific amounts, not a complete cast payroll or a claim about every season. Littleton’s report.

A reported adjustment for two co-stars
In March 2017, Mic reported that the five original cast members agreed to cut their pay by $100,000 per episode for two seasons, freeing a reported $500,000 per episode to help fund raises for Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch. This was described as a negotiated arrangement for that period, not a permanent salary level. Mic’s account.
Other costs contributed, but no full breakdown is available
A retrospective by Mental Floss names shooting costs, celebrity cameos, and royalties for the Barenaked Ladies theme song as additional contributors. It does not assign verified dollar amounts to them. The available reporting does not provide a complete line-item budget for sets, crew, postproduction, residuals, or other expenses, so the $9 million estimate cannot responsibly be divided into precise categories. How the studio-network arrangement fit in
Littleton reported that Warner Bros. TV’s licensing agreement with CBS called for CBS to cover production costs plus a slight premium. That describes the reported financing arrangement between the studio and network; by itself, it does not establish the show’s overall profitability. Littleton’s report.
