The front trunk, or “frunk,” is a $495 option on the 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E, according to Road & Track. Ford says it made the feature optional after learning customers used it less than the company had originally expected. Ford’s current U.S. model page confirms the frunk is available, but does not list its price.
Why is the Mach-E frunk an extra-cost option?
Ford’s stated reason is customer choice. Road & Track quoted Ford Mach-E brand manager Teddy Ankeny, speaking in a YouTube video posted by The Electric Duo, as saying: “Yeah, so we were learning that customers were using their frunk, but perhaps not as much as we had originally intended. And so, in order to kind of preserve that customer choice, we have made it optional for the 2026 model year.”
That explanation describes Ford’s rationale; it does not establish how often Mach-E owners use the frunk or how they have responded to the change. The $495 price is reported by Road & Track, while Ford’s 2026 U.S. Mustang Mach-E page identifies the frunk as available without showing the option price in the material reviewed.
What does the frunk offer?
Ford describes the 2026 Mach-E frunk as drainable, suitable for cargo, and usable as a cooler. That gives buyers a choice: pay the reported $495 option price for the front storage space, or configure the vehicle without it.

There is also recent context for the change. Road & Track reports that frunk volume declined from 4.7 cubic feet to 2.6 cubic feet for the 2025 model year, when Ford added a heat pump. Those capacity figures are Road & Track’s reporting; the Ford page reviewed here does not provide a capacity specification.
How should buyers weigh the $495?
The practical question is whether you expect to use the frunk’s cargo or cooler function enough to justify the additional cost. If you want that separate front storage area, the reported option price is $495. If it would rarely be useful to you, Ford’s change lets you leave it off the configuration. The available information does not establish that the option is a good value for every buyer.
