A 1970 Dodge Charger’s price depends heavily on which car it is. A base model, Charger 500, R/T, Hemi, and 440 Six Pack are not interchangeable comparisons: rarity, documented identity, condition, originality, and repair needs can put them in very different market categories. Before treating an asking price as fair, establish exactly what the car is and whether its evidence and condition support the seller’s claims.
Why some 1970 Chargers command a premium
“1970 Charger” covers cars with substantially different engines and equipment. Hagerty’s model history reports total production of 49,800 for the model year, but only 112 buyers chose the 426-cubic-inch, 425-horsepower Street Hemi and 116 chose the 390-horsepower 440 Six Pack. The range also included six-cylinder and 318-powered cars, 383 options, and the R/T’s 375-horsepower 440. Scarcity and desirability of particular documented configurations help explain why a high-performance example may be valued very differently from a more ordinary car. These production figures are not, by themselves, proof of an individual car’s identity or value. Hagerty’s 1970 Charger model history and valuation page gives the model context.

Value can also reflect condition, originality, restoration quality, mileage, provenance, options, color, and maintenance records. Treat these as factors to investigate, not as features that guarantee a fixed premium. Modifications may appeal to some buyers and reduce interest for others, depending on their quality and the buyer’s intended use.

A price guide is useful only when its configuration and condition grade match the car you are considering. As a dated example, Hagerty’s July 2026 guide gives a #3 Good range of $35,767–$46,200, with a typical estimate around $39,900, for a 1970 Charger 500 equipped with the 318-cubic-inch, 230-horsepower two-barrel V8. That estimate is not a valuation for an R/T, Hemi, Six Pack, modified car, or vehicle in a different condition grade. Hagerty also shows auction results at varied prices; a sale is not a meaningful direct comparison unless the cars’ configurations and condition are understood. Check the guide against the exact 1970 Charger configuration and grade.

When comparing cars, align the details that drive the comparison rather than matching only model year or paint color:
- Model and trim: base Charger, Charger 500, or R/T.
- Engine and transmission: the claimed original equipment, what is fitted now, and whether the original engine is documented or has been replaced.
- Body and structure: corrosion, previous repairs, panel alignment, and restoration quality.
- Originality and evidence: history, invoices, restoration records, parts present, and consistency between the seller’s claims and documentation.
- Condition and intended use: compare cars with the same condition grade, while distinguishing a driver, show car, and restoration project.
Confirm identity and documentation before paying for rarity
Start by asking the seller to identify the claimed trim and engine and to provide whatever supporting documentation is available. Compare those claims with the car, restoration records, invoices, and history. Because the available valuation and parts information does not provide an authoritative VIN-decoding procedure, do not rely on an informal interpretation when identity materially affects the price. Have an experienced Mopar specialist assess the car if originality or configuration is central to the deal.

Ask for clear photographs and records before traveling, then verify the car in person. A persuasive story or a desirable badge is not a substitute for evidence that the particular vehicle matches the description.

Corrosion and concealed repairs can change the economics of a purchase or restoration. Inspect the underside and body for rust, patch panels, filler, panel fit, and signs that damage has been covered rather than properly repaired. Pay particular attention to the rear-window channel and sail-panel area: a documented 1970 Charger restoration describes rust in those locations. Also examine the lower A-pillar. Auto Metal Direct says of the 1968–1970 B-body A-pillar: “The lower section is where moisture and debris collect, making it the most common area for rust.” These are sensible inspection priorities, not a claim that every Charger has rust in those spots. Auto Metal Direct’s 1968–1970 B-body A-pillar restoration information describes the component and its lower-section rust concern.

Mopar’s restoration-parts information lists Auto Metal Direct as a licensed supplier and describes B-body sheet metal for the relevant 1966–1974 range, including floor pans, trunk pans, floor extensions, and related hardware. Auto Metal Direct separately describes complete A-pillar components for 1968–1970 Dodge/Plymouth B-body applications that include the Charger. This supports searching for parts by a specific description such as “1970 Dodge Charger floor pan,” then verifying fitment with the seller for the particular car and component. It does not establish current inventory, a live listing, price, or exact fitment for every car. Mopar’s restoration-parts information explains its restoration-parts program.
