Tesla boycotts are political pressure campaigns aimed at Elon Musk, not protests against electric vehicles as a whole. The best-known effort, Tesla Takedown, asks people to sell their Teslas, divest Tesla stock, and demonstrate at showrooms. Whether that pressure has materially changed Tesla’s sales is harder to establish: recent delivery figures move in different directions by period and region, and they do not isolate the boycott’s effect.
Why are people boycotting Tesla?
Campaigners describe their actions as opposition to Musk’s role in government and public life. In 2025, organizers cited his involvement in the Trump administration, federal spending and workforce cuts, and his political activity as reasons for protesting. Those are campaigners’ stated motivations, not evidence that every Tesla critic shares the same views. The protests also are not inherently opposition to electric vehicles: WIRED described participants with climate-organizing backgrounds who viewed Tesla as a way to influence Musk.
The campaign’s basic theory is that economic pressure on Tesla could influence its chief executive. Tesla Takedown puts that idea plainly: “Hurting Tesla is stopping Musk.” WIRED likewise described the company as a lever for pressure because Musk leads it. That is the organizers’ strategy; it does not establish that a boycott has achieved its intended political effect.
What does Tesla Takedown ask people to do?
The campaign presents itself as decentralized and peaceful. Its website invites supporters to find or host showroom actions, distribute flyers, sell Teslas, and dump Tesla stock. These are distinct forms of action: a customer boycott concerns purchases, a stock sale concerns an investor’s holdings, and a picket is a public demonstration.

In March 2025, The Guardian reported that local organizers planned a Global Day of Action for March 29 at more than 200 Tesla locations worldwide. That number described organizers’ planned reach—not a verified count of completed events, turnout, or current demonstrations. The report also described local groups planning actions rather than a single centrally coordinated national organization.
The campaign website was live when checked on October 4, 2026, but that alone does not establish how many protests are happening now or where. For current calls to action, consult the Tesla Takedown campaign site; its existence is not confirmation that a particular local event is scheduled.

How are protests different from vandalism?
A peaceful picket or boycott is not the same as vandalism or a violent attack. Tesla Takedown describes itself as peaceful, and reporting says organizers distanced the campaign from violent attacks on Tesla sites. Do not assume that people who took part in a demonstration committed crimes, or that an attack represents the movement as a whole.

There is evidence of changing sales and deliveries, but not of a measured boycott-only effect. The Associated Press reported that Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in the second quarter of 2026, up 25% from 384,122 in the same quarter a year earlier. That global delivery figure followed two consecutive years of annual sales declines and two consecutive quarterly gains, according to AP.

Regional estimates tell a different part of the story. Tesla did not break out US sales in the report AP cited; Cox Automotive estimated that US Tesla sales fell 20% year over year in Q2 2026. That estimate is not Tesla’s reported US figure, and it should not be compared as if it were the same measure as global deliveries.
AP also pointed to other relevant factors: lower-priced Model Y and Model 3 versions, reduced leasing and loan costs in Europe, increased general EV purchasing in Europe, and removal of a US EV tax credit. The available figures do not separate the effect of protests or consumer backlash from product changes, competition, policy, regional demand, or other causes. A delivery increase does not prove the boycott had no effect; a regional decline does not prove it caused the decline.

How to assess claims about the boycott’s impact
- Check the period. A year-over-year comparison measures a quarter against the same quarter a year earlier; a sequence of quarterly gains describes a different trend.
- Check the geography and measure. Global deliveries and an estimated US sales decline are not interchangeable. Note whether a number comes from Tesla or an outside estimate.
- Separate aims from outcomes. Organizers’ stated goal of pressuring Musk is not a measured business or political result.
- Consider other explanations. Product availability, financing, policy, competition, and regional demand can affect sales alongside consumer activism.
