Teamsters president Sean O’Brien called firing workers for organizing, striking and exercising their rights “economic terrorism” after Donald Trump praised Elon Musk’s handling of striking workers in an online conversation. O’Brien framed his response as a defense of labor rights—not an endorsement of Kamala Harris or the Democratic Party.

What did Sean O’Brien say about Trump and Elon Musk?

On Aug. 14, 2024, Trump spoke with Musk in an online conversation and praised Musk’s handling of striking workers. O’Brien responded: “Firing workers for organizing, striking, and exercising their rights as Americans is economic terrorism.” Contemporary reports covered the exchange and O’Brien’s criticism (CBS News; PBS NewsHour).

“Economic terrorism” was O’Brien’s characterization of firing workers for exercising those rights. It was not a court finding or a neutral legal classification. His point was that punishing workers for organizing or striking attacks their ability to act collectively.

Why did the comments draw O’Brien’s criticism?

O’Brien said he would criticize anyone who attacked labor. In this case, he objected to Trump’s praise of Musk’s handling of striking workers because he viewed firing workers for organizing and striking as an attack on workers’ rights. The criticism focused on that principle, rather than on a party endorsement.

How the RNC appearance fits the timeline

In July 2024, O’Brien addressed the Republican National Convention after being invited by Trump. Contemporary coverage described him as the first Teamsters president to speak at the convention. He thanked Trump for the invitation while using much of his speech to discuss workers, corporate influence and labor (PBS NewsHour).

That appearance came before Trump’s August conversation with Musk and O’Brien’s subsequent criticism. The chronology helps explain why the exchange attracted attention, but speaking at the RNC did not prevent O’Brien from later criticizing Trump on labor rights.

Was O’Brien’s criticism an endorsement of Harris?

No. In September 2024, the Teamsters chose not to endorse either Trump or Kamala Harris, citing a lack of firm commitments on core union issues. That was a separate decision from O’Brien’s criticism of the Trump-Musk conversation (CBS News).

O’Brien’s response should therefore be read as a stated defense of labor rights, not as a formal endorsement of Harris or the Democratic Party. His RNC speech, his criticism of Trump’s remarks and the union’s later endorsement decision were distinct actions.
