The 15¢ drop in the headline was an early-session quote, not the final reported close. Agriculture.com’s early update on November 4 put January soybeans at $11.19¼ per bushel, down 15¢. Later that day, it reported January soybeans at $11.21½, down 12¾¢; Reuters also reported the most active CBOT soybean contract settled at $11.21½, down 12¾¢. The session was a pullback after Monday’s rally, with soybeans recovering part of their early losses.

What did soybeans close at?

At the close on Tuesday, November 4, the most active CBOT soybean contract settled at $11.21½ per bushel, down 12¾¢, according to Reuters. Agriculture.com’s later update gave the same price and decline for January soybeans. These are dated market reports, not current prices.

The 15¢ figure came from Agriculture.com’s early update, just after 9 a.m. CT: January soybeans were at $11.19¼ per bushel, down 15¢. The later quote was higher and showed a smaller decline. The two figures describe different times in the trading session, not conflicting closing prices.

Why did soybean futures pull back?

Market coverage described the fall as a correction after Monday’s rally, with profit taking contributing to the early pressure. Reuters reported that the most active soybean contract had reached $11.35¾ on Monday, its highest level since June 2024.

Agriculture.com quoted Karl Setzer, partner with Consus Ag Consulting, who pointed to pressure from weaker soybean products and energy, declining crush margins, a weaker cash market, and renewed buying interest in the U.S. dollar. The report also cited uncertainty over government biofuel policy. Setzer said: “This was most noted in the soy complex where losses in products and a weak energy complex applied pressure.”

Brazilian competition and China buying

Setzer also said news that China was booking Brazilian soybeans alongside U.S. supplies had taken some bullish sentiment out of the market after the previous week’s U.S.–China trade agreement. In his words: “News that China is booking Brazil soybeans along with U.S. soybeans is removing some of the bullish sentiment following last week’s market run up following the U.S./China trade agreement.” Barchart’s close summary likewise reported that Brazilian FOB offers had become more competitive as U.S. prices rallied.
