The IRS’s 2024 list included the Long Range All-Wheel Drive and Performance trims, each with a listed $7,500 credit and a $55,000 MSRP limit. Other configurations were not listed, and a model name alone cannot confirm a vehicle’s eligibility. The key change for vehicles delivered in 2024 was a battery-component restriction: a battery containing any component made or assembled by a foreign entity of concern disqualified the vehicle from any part of the credit.
Why did some Model 3 trims lose the 2024 credit?
Starting with vehicles placed in service after December 31, 2023, the battery rules barred a vehicle from receiving any portion of the New Clean Vehicle Credit if its battery contained a component manufactured or assembled by a foreign entity of concern. The IRS explains that this restriction could make a vehicle ineligible even if it met the separate critical-mineral requirements.
As the IRS puts it: “If a vehicle has any battery components that were manufactured or assembled by a foreign entity of concern, then the vehicle is no longer considered a new clean vehicle and therefore is not eligible for a partial New Clean Vehicle Credit ($3,750).” (IRS Topic A FAQ)
This rule explains why battery sourcing mattered, but the available IRS materials do not establish the battery sourcing for every Model 3 trim or vehicle identification number (VIN). It would therefore be inaccurate to say that every Model 3 was disqualified for one universal battery-sourcing reason.

Which 2024 Model 3 versions were listed?
The IRS 2024 qualifying vehicle list named these Model 3 entries:

These are the trims and figures shown on the IRS 2024 qualifying vehicle list. The list does not show every Model 3 configuration. Its entries are not a guarantee that every vehicle with that trim qualified: the individual vehicle, its MSRP, delivery timing, battery requirements and the buyer’s eligibility all mattered.

What determined eligibility for an individual car?
For the 2024 rules, the relevant questions were tied to the specific purchase and vehicle, not simply the “Model 3” name:
- Trim and model year: Check the exact configuration against the IRS list.
- Delivery date: The IRS generally applies the requirements in effect when the vehicle is placed in service, usually when the buyer takes delivery. For a 2024 delivery, the post-December 31, 2023 battery-component rule applied. See the IRS Topic C FAQ.
- VIN-level eligibility: The trim-level list cannot settle whether a particular car qualified. The IRS advises buyers to use Energy Credits Online to check the VIN and to obtain the seller report. See the IRS Topic B FAQ.
- Vehicle price: The listed Model 3 entries had a $55,000 MSRP limit. The specific vehicle had to meet the applicable threshold.
- Buyer requirements: A qualifying vehicle did not automatically entitle every buyer to a credit; taxpayer income and other statutory requirements also applied.
How to check a 2024 purchase
- Find the exact trim and model year, and compare them with the IRS qualifying vehicle list.
- Use the VIN in IRS Energy Credits Online for the vehicle-specific eligibility check.
- Ask the seller for the seller report and confirm that the dealer successfully submitted it to the IRS.
- Apply the requirements relevant to the date the vehicle was placed in service, then check the buyer’s own eligibility before claiming a credit.
The IRS advises VIN confirmation rather than relying on a broad model-level description. Its Topic B FAQ describes the VIN check and seller report; its Topic C FAQ explains why delivery timing can matter.

Can buyers claim the federal credit now?
No. As of October 8, 2026, the IRS says the New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. That current cutoff is separate from the historical question of which 2024 Model 3 purchases met the rules at the time. See the IRS clean vehicle tax credits page.
