Some Australian supermarkets reported shortages of home-brand soft drinks and soda water in March 2024 after disruptions to carbon dioxide (CO₂) supplies. The reports describe a specific supply disruption at that time—not proof of a shortage today. BOC later said a new Victorian facility began supplying the market in March 2025, but current shelf availability has not been verified.
What caused the reported soft-drink shortage?
On 1 March 2024, ABC News reported that some supermarket shelves were short of carbonated drinks, including home-brand soft drinks and soda water. BOC told ABC it faced a short-term CO₂ supply shortage on Australia’s east coast, citing interruptions from several local sources and problems affecting international freight for imported CO₂. That was BOC’s explanation, not an independent audit of every cause.
Air Liquide gave ABC a separate explanation for a disruption, particularly in New South Wales: planned maintenance at a source location. The company said it had planned for the disruption and was monitoring and managing storage and supply. These were supplier-specific accounts, not one confirmed explanation for every affected product or location. ABC News reported the shortage and supplier statements on 1 March 2024.
Which drinks and retailers were affected?
Woolworths said CO₂ shortages had affected some soft drinks in its stores. ABC reported the retailer’s estimate that about 20 of its own-brand soft drinks were affected at the time. Woolworths said alternatives were available. Coles said it was working with suppliers to reduce the impact and had increased alternative drinks.

Contemporary reporting also identified soda water and lemonade as difficult to find. PerthNow relayed shoppers’ reports of products being unavailable for weeks, but those complaints are individual experiences, not a measure of how widespread or long-lasting the shortages were. PerthNow’s 1 March 2024 report covered the shopper complaints and product examples.
What changed after the 2024 disruption?
BOC announced that its Longford facility in Victoria began supplying the market on 17 March 2025. The company stated that the facility has annual capacity of more than 60,000 tonnes of beverage-grade liquid CO₂. That is a stated capacity figure, not verified annual output. BOC said the facility would increase national production capacity and improve supply reliability, particularly on the east coast. BOC’s announcement describes the facility and its expected contribution.
The new capacity does not show whether every supermarket product returned to shelves, whether any later shortage occurred, or what is available now. The reports about retailer products and the supply disruption date to March 2024; current stock and product status have not been established here.

If you mainly want plain soda water, a home sparkling-water maker may be an option when you can obtain a compatible cylinder exchange or refill locally. It is not a substitute for the broader range of flavoured supermarket soft drinks, and it does not resolve the underlying supply-chain issue.
