Honda first announced the project in April 2024 as an investment of approximately CAD$15 billion, including investment by joint-venture partners. After postponing it by about two years in May 2025, the company said in its FY2026 Form 20-F that it suspended the project following a March 2026 reassessment of its electrification strategy. The original “US$11 billion” headline was a currency conversion of Honda’s Canadian-dollar figure, not an additional investment.
What Honda proposed for Ontario
Honda’s April 25, 2024 announcement described a connected EV supply chain in Ontario, intended to strengthen the company’s North American supply system ahead of anticipated future demand. The plan covered vehicle assembly, battery production and two supplier facilities:
- EV assembly and battery plants in Alliston: Honda said it was evaluating a dedicated EV assembly plant and a standalone battery plant.
- Cathode active material and precursor processing: A proposed facility with POSCO Future M.
- Battery separator production: A proposed facility with Asahi Kasei.

What the $11 billion figure means
Honda stated the proposed investment as approximately CAD$15 billion, including investment by joint-venture partners. The US$11 billion wording is a conversion of that Canadian-dollar amount. The figures refer to the same project investment and should not be added together.

In April 2024, Canada’s Department of Finance said Honda and its partners were expected to benefit from upwards of $2.5 billion in support through federal EV Supply Chain and Clean Technology Manufacturing investment tax credits. What the original plan’s numbers represented
Honda’s April 2024 figures described projected scale, not achieved results. The company said EV production was expected to begin in 2028. At full operation, the proposed assembly plant was to have annual capacity of 240,000 vehicles and the battery plant capacity of 36 GWh per year. Honda estimated at least 1,000 new associates for the EV and battery facilities, in addition to securing the then-current 4,200 associates at its two Ontario manufacturing facilities. At the time, Honda framed the proposal as preparation for future North American EV demand. CEO Toshihiro Mibe said in the April 25, 2024 announcement: “We will strengthen our EV supply system and capability with an eye toward a future increase in EV demand in North America.” That statement explains the rationale Honda gave when announcing the plan; it is not evidence that the project is proceeding today.
