Why ServiceNow Acquired data.world After Announcing Its Moveworks Deal

ServiceNow’s data.world and Moveworks acquisitions target different parts of its AI strategy. The agreement dates, closing dates, and disclosed deal terms tell a more precise story than “months after.”

ServiceNow agreed to acquire data.world in May 2025 to add enterprise data cataloging and governance capabilities to its AI platform. The deal followed its March agreement to acquire Moveworks, but the two purchases serve different roles: data.world focuses on making company data more understandable to AI, while Moveworks provides employee-facing assistance, enterprise search, and agentic reasoning.

What happened, and when did each deal close?

ServiceNow announced its agreement to acquire data.world on May 7, 2025. The company later reported that the transaction closed in July 2025. It did not disclose the purchase price in its announcement. (ServiceNow announcement; ServiceNow Q2 2025 results)

The “months after” in the headline refers to announcements, not completed acquisitions. ServiceNow announced its agreement to acquire Moveworks on March 10, 2025, before announcing the data.world agreement in May. The data.world purchase closed first; Moveworks closed on December 15, 2025. (ServiceNow’s March announcement; ServiceNow’s completion announcement)

Acquisition Agreement announced Closed Role described by ServiceNow Deal value disclosed
data.world May 7, 2025 July 2025 Data cataloging and governance to provide context for enterprise data Not disclosed in the May announcement (ServiceNow)
Moveworks March 10, 2025 December 15, 2025 Employee-facing assistant, enterprise search, and agentic reasoning Approximately $2.9 billion in ServiceNow’s SEC filing, subject to final consideration mechanics

ServiceNow’s SEC filing also said the data.world acquisition was not material to its consolidated financial statements. That accounting disclosure does not establish the deal’s strategic importance to ServiceNow’s product plans. (ServiceNow Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2025)

Why did ServiceNow buy data.world?

ServiceNow said the acquisition would bring data meaning, context, relationships, and governance into its AI platform, with the aim of helping AI agents and workflows use enterprise information more effectively. A data catalog helps organizations describe and organize data assets and their relationships; governance capabilities help define how that data is managed. The intended contribution is a better-understood information base for AI—not, by itself, proof that an AI system will produce accurate answers or make sound decisions.

Gaurav Rewari, ServiceNow’s senior vice president and general manager of data and analytics products, framed the company’s rationale this way: “To truly harness the power of AI, enterprises need more than data—they need trusted, connected intelligence.” That is ServiceNow’s strategic argument, not independent evidence of improved outcomes after the acquisition. (ServiceNow, May 7, 2025)

How does data.world differ from Moveworks?

The acquisitions address different parts of ServiceNow’s stated AI platform strategy. Data.world is about the information an AI system can draw on and how that information is described and governed. Moveworks is about how employees find information and get help through an assistant, search, and reasoning capabilities.

data.world Moveworks
Primary focus Enterprise data cataloging, context, metadata, relationships, and governance Employee-facing assistant, enterprise search, and agentic reasoning
Part of the AI experience Helps make enterprise information more interpretable and governed Provides an employee interaction and information-discovery layer
ServiceNow’s stated strategic fit Give AI agents and workflows data they can understand and use Put AI to work for employees across business functions

In December 2025, ServiceNow said Moveworks served 5.5 million employee users and that about 250 mutual customers already used both technologies. Those figures were company-reported in the completion announcement; they indicate existing overlap, not proof that the acquisitions had been technically integrated. Amit Zavery, ServiceNow’s president, COO, and chief product officer, said: “Moveworks accelerates ServiceNow’s vision to put AI to work for people across every corner of every business.” (ServiceNow, December 15, 2025)

What is known about the data.world deal price?

ServiceNow did not disclose financial terms in its May 2025 announcement. TechCrunch reported that data.world had a $350 million valuation in its 2022 Series C financing, attributing that figure to PitchBook. That historical financing valuation is not the price ServiceNow paid to acquire the company, and it cannot be used to infer the purchase price. (TechCrunch, May 7, 2025)

What the two acquisitions do—and do not—show

Taken together, the deals show ServiceNow pursuing complementary capabilities: a more contextual and governed data foundation, alongside tools employees can use to search for information and interact with AI. They explain the direction ServiceNow says it wants to take its platform; they do not establish the extent, timing, or results of technical integration between data.world, Moveworks, and ServiceNow products. The announcements and cited filings do not provide post-acquisition evidence of measurable gains in accuracy, trust, decision speed, or return on investment.
