Which Blade laptop did the story concern?

What did Razer reportedly spend the money on?
Fast Company reported on March 12, 2014, that a Razer representative put the cost of making the custom-colored ports at about $380,000. The report does not provide an audited breakdown of that amount, so it is best understood as a company-reported figure rather than a verified accounting total. Fast Company’s report attributed the spending figure to a company representative; it did not present it as a direct quote from CEO Min-Liang Tan.
Tan told Fast Company that Razer wanted a specific acid-green hue that would be reserved for the company: “We wanted to get the specific acid green that we really liked, which means [this color of plastic] could only be used for our purposes. We’re the only people in the world that use that hue.” He also described sending people to the factory to check the color mix and performing quality control to make sure the color would not change over time. These steps help explain why a small cosmetic detail could involve more than choosing a color at the design stage.

Was the USB port actually redesigned?
Not in the sense of changing its USB hardware. TweakTown’s March 13, 2014 report said the USB hardware was unchanged and that Razer customized the plastic color instead: TweakTown’s report on the ports. The headline’s “redesigning” shorthand can therefore be misleading: the distinguishing work was on the port’s appearance and its production controls, not a new USB function.
Why would a custom color cost so much?
Standardized production can use an existing plastic color and established manufacturing settings. Razer’s reported approach added a company-specific hue and required attention to color consistency at the factory. Tan’s account points to factory checks and quality control as part of the effort. The public reports do not itemize how much of the approximately $380,000 went to color development, production, oversight or other costs, so those elements explain the nature of the decision, not a precise cost allocation.

For a laptop maker, a consistent accent color can make a product visually recognizable. The trade-off is that a distinctive cosmetic choice may require more coordination than using a standard component finish. The available reporting describes that design and manufacturing decision; it does not establish that the spend improved the laptop’s speed, reliability or USB performance.
