Re:

Why RAM Prices Are So High in the US—and What’s Driving Them

Memory makers are prioritizing server DRAM as demand stays strong, tightening supply across the market. The latest global contract-price forecast signals further increases, not a date for lower US retail prices.

RAM prices are under pressure because memory makers are directing more advanced DRAM capacity toward high-performance servers while demand for server memory remains strong. That squeezes supply across the broader DRAM market, including memory used in PCs. The latest cited forecast expects another increase in global contract prices in 4Q26, but it does not show how much a US shopper will pay at a store—or when retail prices might fall.

Why RAM prices are rising

The main driver is a supply-allocation squeeze. TrendForce said on September 30, 2026, that suppliers were prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products in 4Q26, leaving the overall DRAM market undersupplied. It also identified packaging and testing constraints and limited flexibility to expand front-end production in server DRAM. TrendForce’s 4Q26 outlook describes the market mechanism, rather than tracking US retail prices.

Server demand competes for constrained capacity

Cloud providers and server makers have been increasing procurement as server CPU availability improves and demand for general-purpose servers grows. TrendForce connects this demand to systems supporting agentic AI workloads. That means AI-related infrastructure is part of the server-memory demand story; it does not establish that AI alone caused every increase in consumer RAM prices.

Server and PC memory are different, but supply decisions connect them

Server DRAM and the memory modules consumers buy for PCs are not interchangeable products in every use. However, when suppliers prioritize capacity and investment for server applications, less capacity may be available for PC DRAM. TrendForce says PC manufacturers continued procuring memory during 2026 in anticipation of tight supply in 2027, and warns that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 if more capacity shifts to server uses.

What the latest price forecasts mean

TrendForce’s forecasts point to continued increases, but at a slower projected pace in 4Q26 than in 3Q26. Both figures are quarter-over-quarter forecasts for conventional DRAM contract prices—not measurements of what US retailers charged or will charge for a particular kit.

Forecast period Projected change What it represents
3Q26 13–18% quarter over quarter TrendForce forecast published July 3, 2026. Source
4Q26 10–15% quarter over quarter TrendForce forecast published September 30, 2026. Source

The lower range in the later outlook suggests a more moderate expected increase, not a price decline. These are successive forecasts, not audited results of the final change in contract prices.

Why consumer demand may slow the increases

Higher component costs and affordability limits are weighing on PC and smartphone demand. In July, TrendForce cited weaker consumer demand and a higher comparison base as factors moderating the expected increase, noting that record-high contract prices were pushing consumer-market buyers toward affordability limits. Its September outlook also said higher notebook component costs were weighing on sales, even as PC makers continued buying memory to secure supply.

What this means for US shoppers

The available forecasts concern global DRAM contract prices, which are negotiated between suppliers and buyers in the supply chain. They are not a US retail price index, a quote for a consumer RAM kit, or a prediction of the next price tag at a specific store. The cited information does not establish current US prices or availability, nor does it give a date when US retail prices will fall.

For a meaningful comparison, match the same memory generation, capacity, form factor and kit configuration, then compare dated US listings over time. A DDR5 desktop DIMM kit is not a like-for-like comparison with a DDR4 kit or a laptop SO-DIMM. The market outlook alone cannot establish whether a particular listing is a good deal or whether buying now is better than waiting.

How to choose RAM if you need an upgrade

Market pressure does not change the basic compatibility checks. Before buying, verify what your computer supports and compare the total price of compatible kits rather than relying on a general market forecast.

  1. Check device support. Confirm the supported DDR generation and memory capacity in your computer or motherboard documentation.
  2. Match the form factor. Desktop systems commonly use DIMMs, while many laptops use SO-DIMMs; some laptops have memory that cannot be replaced.
  3. Compare equivalent configurations. Compare kits with the same generation, capacity and number of modules, and consider total kit cost.
  4. Confirm the listing fits your system. Market reports do not validate compatibility or verify a retailer’s stock, so check the device specifications and listing details directly.

Why headline market revenue is not a RAM price

TrendForce reported global DRAM module market revenue of $21.2 billion in 2025, up 59% year over year, in a release published September 22, 2026. That figure describes revenue across the module market; it is not a measure of US consumer prices, retail sales, or the cost of a particular RAM configuration. TrendForce press center
