The dispute was not simply over whether Tesla had announced a launch. It was about whether that rollout counted as a public, fully driverless service under the specific market rules.
What the June Polymarket contract required
The market asked, “Will Tesla launch a driverless Robotaxi service before July?” It resolved Yes only if Tesla publicly launched a fully driverless taxi service by June 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Polymarket’s [market page] defined the threshold more narrowly than an announcement or a limited rollout.
- A member of the general public had to be able to summon and ride in the vehicle.
- No human onboard or remotely could actively control the vehicle.
- An emergency monitor could be present only if they were not positioned to take control and were not actively driving in normal operation.
- Employee-only or invite-only testers, closed betas, private-owner Full Self-Driving releases, permits, press demonstrations, and prototypes without live public riders did not qualify.
The market named a consensus of credible reporting as its resolution source. Under those terms, calling a service a “launch” was not enough: public availability and the degree of human supervision also mattered.
How the Austin rollout compared with the rules
Futurism’s July 2, 2025, report described Tesla’s Austin service as an extremely limited rollout of roughly 10 to 20 vehicles, available by invitation, with a safety monitor in the front passenger seat who could intervene. Those are contemporaneous reported details, not an independently audited fleet count or safety assessment. [Futurism’s report]

| Contract question | Reported Austin service | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Could the general public summon and ride? | Access was invite-only, according to Futurism. | The rules excluded invite-only testers and closed betas. |
| Was the vehicle fully driverless under the contract? | An in-car safety monitor could intervene, according to Futurism. | The rules said a monitor positioned to take control did not satisfy the condition. |
| Was the qualifying service in place by the deadline? | The June market’s deadline was June 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET; the market page resolved No. | The contract required the qualifying public service by that precise cutoff, not merely a later or narrower rollout. |
Electrek’s June 30 coverage also pointed to the invite-only access and safety monitor as reasons the service fell short of the market’s wording. [Electrek’s report]
Why some traders objected
Futurism reported that Yes-share holders argued invitees should count as users rather than testers and pressed for an outcome they favored. The article quoted an anonymous user comment: “This is a public launch,” and another: “If they resolve this any other besides a YES, it’s called a scam.” Those were trader comments, not statements by Tesla or Polymarket.

The disagreement turned on how ordinary-language descriptions such as “public launch” should be applied to the contract’s explicit limits. But the market’s written criteria specifically excluded invite-only access and required a particular form of driverless operation. The reviewed reporting documents traders’ arguments; it does not establish that Polymarket formally changed the rules or granted a formal request to amend them.
Futurism and Electrek also reported Elon Musk using the phrase “Money-making opportunity” about the market. That fragment does not change the resolution terms or establish a promise that the market would resolve Yes.

What the market volume does—and does not—show
Polymarket’s June market page reports $11,890,598 in trading volume. A separate market asking whether Tesla would launch before August, with a July 30, 2025 end date, reports $975,139 in volume. [July-ending market page]
These are market-page-reported trading totals, not the amount any individual trader lost. Electrek reported individual loss claims, including a claim of $50,000, but that is distinct from Polymarket’s volume statistic. Neither total shows how much any particular person wagered or their net result.

What the dispute says about prediction-market rules
A prediction-market contract is resolved against its stated criteria, not solely against a company’s label for an event. In this case, the meaningful distinctions were public access versus invitation-only participation, a vehicle without a controlling human versus one monitored by someone able to intervene, and the exact June deadline versus a rollout that might expand later.
That distinction matters for traders: a market can be about a real-world event while still defining success more narrowly than casual use of the same words. Before trading, read the resolution conditions and deadline, including exclusions and the named resolution source. A large volume figure or a prominent public announcement does not override those terms.

The word “disastrous” in Futurism’s headline is editorial characterization. The reporting supports describing the Austin rollout as limited and supervised; the cited materials do not provide a formal independent performance assessment of the service.
