Valve’s Steam Support notice says PayPal remains an option for EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD; it gives no date for restoring the other currencies.
What Valve says caused the PayPal checkout change
Valve’s Steam Support purchasing notice attributes the change to a payment-processing decision, not to Steam removing currencies from its store. Valve’s notice says: “In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam.”

The acquiring bank is not named in the notice. Valve says PayPal purchases in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD are affected. Its published notice describes the operational effect, but does not provide the bank’s own explanation.
Which currencies still work with PayPal on Steam?

Does this mean Steam stopped supporting my local currency?
No. Steam’s store currency and the payment method used to pay are separate things. Valve’s Steamworks supported-currencies documentation says currencies marked live are available to Steam customers. Its live list includes currencies such as Polish złoty (PLN), Norwegian krone (NOK), Mexican peso (MXN), and Swiss franc (CHF), even though those are outside the six currencies listed in the PayPal notice.
In other words, Steam may price a purchase in your local currency while PayPal is unavailable for a transaction in that currency. PC Gamer’s contemporaneous coverage noted that being in the EU does not by itself make PayPal available for purchases charged in złoty in Poland; the relevant distinction is the transaction currency, not EU membership alone (PC Gamer, August 13, 2025).

Steamworks also says that customers in countries without native currency support are charged in USD, except in geographically European countries, which use EUR. That store-currency rule is distinct from whether PayPal appears among a customer’s checkout options.
What has Valve said about the bank’s reason?
The official purchasing notice says an acquiring bank stopped processing Steam transactions in certain currencies; it does not explain why. A later GamesRadar report published August 14, 2025 quoted Valve telling Rock Paper Shotgun that the stoppage was “regarding content on Steam, related to what we’ve previously commented on surrounding Mastercard.” The report also quoted Valve saying that one of PayPal’s acquiring banks decided to stop processing Steam transactions, cutting off PayPal in a number of currencies.
That reported comment links the issue to content on Steam and Valve’s earlier comments about Mastercard, but neither source names the bank or provides its own account of the decision. It would therefore go beyond the available statements to present a specific bank motive—or a decision by PayPal itself to block particular countries—as established fact.

When will PayPal return in the affected currencies?
Valve says it hopes to restore PayPal for the affected currencies, but has not announced a date. Its wording is: “We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future but the timeline is uncertain.” Valve also says it is evaluating additional payment methods; availability may depend on the customer’s region and what Steam displays at checkout.
How to pay or add Steam Wallet funds instead
If PayPal is not offered for your transaction currency, use another payment method shown on your Steam checkout page. The available methods can vary, so confirm that the option appears for your account and purchase before relying on it.
Valve also suggests considering a Steam Wallet code if none of the available checkout methods works. A code adds funds to the Steam Wallet; it does not restore PayPal as a checkout option. Check the code’s region and redemption terms before buying, since a code may not work for every account or location.
