Paramount agreed in 2025 to pay $16 million to settle Donald Trump’s lawsuit over how CBS’s 60 Minutes edited an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The settlement came while Paramount was seeking FCC approval for its merger with Skydance, but the available facts establish a timeline—not that the payment secured approval. The FCC approved the deal on July 24, 2025, and it closed on August 7.

What was Trump’s lawsuit about?

Trump sued CBS over the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Harris, his opponent in the 2024 presidential election. His lawsuit alleged that the broadcast’s treatment of Harris’s answer was improper. The settlement resolved the dispute; it was not a court finding that CBS broke the law or that Trump’s allegations were true. AP reported the settlement terms and lawsuit.

What did the $16 million settlement provide?

Paramount agreed to pay $16 million to settle the case, with the agreement reached with help from a mediator, according to AP’s July 2, 2025 report. Paramount said the money would go toward Trump’s future presidential library and legal fees. The company also said the settlement did not include an apology or an expression of regret. CBS News reported the announcement and the merger-review context.

The agreement also committed 60 Minutes to releasing transcripts of future interviews with presidential candidates after broadcast. It allowed redactions required for legal or national-security concerns, AP reported.

How did the settlement overlap with the Skydance merger review?

Paramount was seeking FCC approval for its proposed merger with Skydance while the settlement was being announced. Paramount and Skydance had announced a definitive merger agreement on July 7, 2024; Paramount described it as a two-step transaction in its merger announcement.

That timing prompted critics to characterize the settlement as an effort to curry favor with the Trump administration or as a threat to press independence. Those are critics’ interpretations of the circumstances, not proof that the payment bought regulatory approval. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the lawsuit was not a factor in the agency’s review, according to CBS News’s report on the FCC decision. The accounts should be kept distinct: the settlement and regulatory review overlapped, while the chairman publicly denied that the lawsuit affected the review.

Did the settlement clear the way for the merger?

It preceded the FCC’s approval, but sequence alone does not establish that it caused the decision. Critics linked the payment to Paramount’s regulatory position; Carr said the lawsuit was not part of the FCC’s review. The documented outcome is that the agency approved the merger on July 24 and the transaction closed August 7. The cited accounts do not establish a bargain between Paramount and the administration, and the settlement itself did not decide the merits of Trump’s underlying claims.
