Re:

Why Nvidia Replaced Intel in the Dow Jones Industrial Average

Nvidia’s 2024 addition to the Dow was an index reconstitution, not a corporate handoff or buy signal. Here’s why Intel was removed and what the price-weighted change meant.

Nvidia replaced Intel in the Dow Jones Industrial Average before trading opened on November 8, 2024. S&P Dow Jones Indices said the changes would give the index more representative exposure to semiconductors and materials. It was an index reconstitution—not a corporate handoff, and not a recommendation to buy Nvidia or sell Intel.

What changed in November 2024?

S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the changes on November 1, 2024. Alongside Nvidia’s addition and Intel’s removal from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), Sherwin-Williams replaced Dow Inc. The changes took effect before the market opened on November 8, 2024. The official announcement also named Vistra as a separate addition to the Dow Jones Utility Average.

Index Action Company Ticker Effective date
DJIA Added Nvidia NVDA November 8, 2024
DJIA Removed Intel INTC November 8, 2024
DJIA Added Sherwin-Williams SHW November 8, 2024
DJIA Removed Dow Inc. DOW November 8, 2024

“Took Intel’s place” means Nvidia became one of the DJIA’s 30 constituents as Intel ceased to be one. Nvidia did not acquire Intel, take over its operations, or receive its assets. The official adjustment notice lists the additions, deletions, tickers, and classifications.

Why did the committee make the change?

S&P Dow Jones Indices gave a representativeness rationale: the changes were intended to provide more representative exposure to the semiconductor industry and the materials sector. The notice identifies the constituent changes but does not offer a detailed performance-based diagnosis of Intel.

Why Nvidia fit the moment

Nvidia is a major U.S. semiconductor company and a leading provider of chips and platforms used in AI computing. Its growing prominence during the AI infrastructure investment cycle made it a high-profile representative of the industry. Adding it increased the Dow’s exposure to an AI-linked semiconductor leader; it did not turn the index into an AI fund or give it comprehensive semiconductor coverage.

Why Intel’s departure drew attention

Intel was a long-standing Dow constituent, but its share-price decline reduced its influence in the index, and its competitive position had weakened relative to Nvidia in AI-oriented semiconductor markets. That is market context, not a stated finding that the committee removed Intel for one specific performance reason. Associated Press coverage framed the move against the contrasting fortunes of the two companies; the AP report provides that broader context.

Removal from the DJIA did not remove Intel from public trading, Nasdaq, the S&P 500, or other indexes automatically. An index change concerns membership in that particular benchmark.

How does the Dow’s price weighting affect the meaning?

The DJIA is price-weighted, not market-cap-weighted. A constituent’s influence is based primarily on its share price relative to the other members, rather than the total market value of all its shares. As a result, a company with a large market capitalization can have less influence on the Dow’s daily point movement than a company with a higher per-share price.

  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

For example, if one constituent’s share price is much lower than another’s, a similar percentage move in the lower-priced stock generally has less effect on the index’s point change. The Dow’s divisor is adjusted for events such as stock splits and changes in membership so that the index does not mechanically jump just because its composition changed. A split can therefore change a stock’s price-based influence without proportionally changing the company’s market capitalization.

Nvidia’s addition did not make the Dow reflect Nvidia’s full market capitalization. Its index influence depends on its share price relative to the other constituents and the divisor. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the DJIA and its methodology; Howard Silverblatt, an S&P DJI analyst, also discussed price weighting and Intel’s influence in a Yahoo Finance interview.

What did the change mean for investors and Dow-tracking funds?

Funds designed to track the DJIA had to adjust their portfolios to reflect the revised index, generally adding Nvidia and removing Intel according to each fund’s implementation process. Managers can differ in when and how they execute trades around an effective date. Rebalancing can create trading demand near an index change, but it does not establish a lasting price effect.

  • A fund that directly tracks the DJIA has an index-following mandate.
  • A fund tracking another Dow-branded index is not necessarily required to make the same trades.
  • A portfolio benchmarked to the DJIA may adjust to reduce tracking differences, depending on its strategy.
  • Investors who hold Intel in an ordinary brokerage account were not required to sell it; they could continue to own Intel, Nvidia, both, or neither.

The change did not require every index fund to buy Nvidia. Only funds and portfolios that track or closely follow the relevant benchmark have a direct index-related reason to rebalance.

Did inclusion make Nvidia a better investment?

No conclusion about Nvidia’s future returns follows from index membership alone. Inclusion is a portfolio-construction decision and a marker of the committee’s view of the index’s representation, not a forecast of a company’s share price.

An investment decision still depends on factors such as revenue growth, margins, competition, product cycles, customer concentration, export controls, capital spending, and valuation. Index-related buying may affect trading around a reconstitution, but earnings expectations, valuation, economic conditions, and changes in AI spending can matter more to subsequent performance. Intel’s removal is likewise not, by itself, a sell signal.

What did the replacement say about the Dow?

The change made the Dow’s composition more visibly connected to modern computing and the AI investment cycle, while marking the reduced standing of a legacy semiconductor name. It also showed how the “Industrial Average” includes major technology companies as well as firms associated with older industrial sectors.

The DJIA remains a concentrated, 30-stock benchmark whose price weighting differs from the market-cap weighting used by broader indexes. The replacement illustrates both its symbolic value as a prominent blue-chip gauge and the limits of treating it as a complete picture of the U.S. stock market or the semiconductor industry. Bloomberg’s coverage of the announcement captures the market significance of Nvidia’s rise, but the committee’s decision was not a simple contest in which the largest company automatically displaced the smallest.
