Novo Nordisk has not published a single reason for its lower Wegovy prices in China. The best-supported explanation is commercial. Novo launched Wegovy in mainland China in November 2024 with a volume-capped strategy aimed first at patients paying out of pocket, and it later cut some prices as competition in the obesity-drug market intensified. The prices reported so far vary by dose and province, so they are not a single national price, and they do not show that most Chinese patients are reimbursed.
The prices reported so far
Two sets of figures are in circulation. Both come from reporting rather than from a Novo price list, so treat them as reported prices.

The December 2025 figures apply to some provinces. They should not be read as a national tariff.
What “cheap” means in this comparison
Fortune described the 2024 launch prices as well below U.S. prices, and Chinese coverage has repeated that framing. The reporting does not include a matched comparison of the same dose, in the same month, through the same channel. Without that, the size of the gap cannot be measured. The table below shows what the reports do and do not cover.

Why the price may be lower
Novo has not stated a single cause. The evidence points to three factors that fit together, and the link between them is an inference rather than a company statement.
A volume-capped launch aimed at self-paying patients
Novo’s launch slides say: “Out-of-pocket market is initial focus of launch.” The company described a volume cap, selected hospital listings, and an exploration of commercial insurance for selected sub-populations. A lower price on a self-pay product can make sense when a company expects to sell a large number of units and wants to build a patient base early. This is a reasonable reading of the launch strategy, but Novo has not said it was the reason for its pricing.

Competition and generic pressure
Reuters reported in December 2025 that Novo and Eli Lilly were both cutting obesity-drug prices in China, and that local companies and potential generic entrants were part of the picture. Novo’s 2025 Form 20-F says semaglutide’s compound patent expired in China in 2017, and that Novo had received notices of applications for generic versions of Wegovy and other products. The expiry and the filings are real context, but they do not establish that generics are on the market at scale, and they do not prove that generic pressure caused a particular price decision.
Scale of the market
Novo’s 2025 investor presentation cites 184 million people with obesity in China and 55 million seeking anti-obesity-medication treatment. These figures use 2019 data and cite Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology and Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research. They describe the size of the opportunity at that time, not a current count. A large potential patient pool is one reason a company might accept a lower price per unit in exchange for volume.

China’s pricing policy context
A government account published in April 2026 by the State Council and China Daily describes a drug-pricing framework in which the initial price for newly launched drugs is based on innovation. The same account discusses medical-insurance payment standards as a pricing guide, and it mentions commercial insurance and charitable funding as parts of the wider environment. The deputy director of the National Healthcare Security Administration, Shi Zihai, said: “The measures aim to encourage enterprises to continue R&D and innovation, while guiding fair and reasonable pricing for other drugs.” That is a statement about policy direction. It does not explain how Wegovy’s price was set, and it does not establish that Wegovy is covered by the national insurance system.
What the reporting does not establish
- Novo’s internal reasoning for its China price decisions. No company statement has tied any single factor to the price cut.
- Whether any generic semaglutide has been approved or launched in China. The filings cited show applications, not market entry.
- Reimbursement for Wegovy under China’s public or commercial insurance.
- Prices after the reporting cited here. The most recent price report is from December 2025 and the most recent policy account is from April 2026, so later changes are possible.
How to check what you would actually pay
If you are considering Wegovy in China, or comparing it with a price in another country, the sticker price is only the starting point. Work through these steps before drawing a conclusion.

- Confirm the dose. Prices differ by dose, and a starter-dose figure says little about the cost of a maintenance dose.
- Ask whether the quote is a self-pay cash price, and whether it is per pen, per month, or per course.
- Ask whether the clinic or hospital is one of Novo’s selected listings, since access was described as selective at launch.
- Ask your insurer in writing whether Wegovy is covered. Commercial-insurance exploration was described for selected groups only, so do not assume coverage.
- Calculate the annual cost, including consultations, follow-up visits, and possible price changes, rather than a single monthly figure.
If you live outside mainland China, the Chinese price does not set what you will pay, and the same comparison steps apply to your own market.
