What did Novo Nordisk freeze?
On August 20, 2025, Futurism reported that Novo Nordisk had frozen hiring in non-business-critical areas, citing a company statement to Reuters. The report describes a restriction on some hiring, not a company-wide halt to recruitment. Futurism’s account is the basis for that detail.
The freeze was a distinct action from the workforce reduction Novo Nordisk announced the following month. A hiring freeze limits recruitment; it does not itself mean existing employees have been laid off.
Why was the company reallocating resources?
On Novo Nordisk’s August 6, 2025, earnings call, CEO Mike Doustdar described a push to redirect spending toward areas the company considered growth priorities. He said, “We need to reallocate and relook at our cost base and really put the money where the growth is,” and said the company would “focus more on diabetes and obesity, as this is our main core and has always been.” These were management’s explanations of its priorities, not an independent assessment of the company’s prospects. The company’s actions came alongside a more mixed business picture than the dramatic framing of a company in “deep trouble” suggests. Novo Nordisk reported sales and profit growth in the first half of 2025, while management also lowered its full-year outlook. That combination helps explain the stated focus on costs and growth priorities without treating a restructuring as evidence that the business was simply collapsing.
How did the hiring freeze differ from the later job cuts?
On September 10, 2025, Novo Nordisk announced a company-wide transformation and said it intended to reduce its global workforce by about 9,000 positions from a workforce of 78,400, including about 5,000 in Denmark. It expected annualized savings of DKK 8 billion by the end of 2026 and said the savings would be redirected toward growth opportunities in diabetes and obesity. These were figures and plans stated by the company in 2025. Novo Nordisk’s announcement describes the plan.

What is known about the outcome and current status?
Novo Nordisk’s 2025 annual report, published in 2026, says around 9,000 positions had been reduced globally, including 5,000 in Denmark. That is the company’s reported outcome. The annual report filed with the SEC provides the update.
A Novo Nordisk company update in September 2026 identifies Mike Doustdar as president and CEO and reports more than 67,000 employees worldwide. It does not say whether the non-business-critical hiring freeze reported in August 2025 remains in force, so its current status cannot be confirmed from that update. The September 2026 company update gives the workforce figure.
