Re:

Why MediaTek Planned a RMB 300 Million Investment in China’s Chip Fund

MediaTek’s planned RMB 300 million investment was a strategic 2014 commitment to a China semiconductor fund, reported then as US$48.9 million.

In November 2014, MediaTek said it planned to invest RMB 300 million in a semiconductor fund linked to the Shanghai City Government and SummitView Capital. Contemporary reports converted that amount to US$48.9 million, the rounded figure behind the headline’s “$49 million.” The stated rationale was to deepen Taiwan–China cooperation and improve MediaTek’s position in the semiconductor industry—not a personal investment opportunity.

What MediaTek announced

On November 25, 2014, EE Times reported that MediaTek planned to commit RMB 300 million, then equivalent to US$48.9 million. Taipei Times also reported the RMB amount and contemporary dollar conversion. Thus, “$49 million” was a rounded conversion of the yuan commitment, not a separate U.S.-dollar promise; it should not be read as a current-value estimate.

Why MediaTek said it was investing

MediaTek chairman Tsai Ming-kai described the strategic aim as building closer cross-strait business ties and strengthening the company’s competitive position. Taipei Times quoted him: “By investing in this fund, MediaTek aims to deepen the cooperation and partnership between Taiwan and China and to gain a better market position in the world’s semiconductor industry.” That is the company’s stated rationale at the time, not evidence that the fund later delivered those results.

The fund’s broader stated purpose was to support development of China’s semiconductor market. SummitView Capital’s November 25 announcement described a RMB 10 billion fund and named MediaTek among its anchor investors.

How large was the fund?

Contemporary accounts describe the fund’s size in different stages. Taipei Times and EE Times reported RMB 3 billion in initial funding, with plans for it to grow to RMB 10 billion. SummitView’s announcement described a RMB 10 billion fund. These figures reflect the reported rollout and target, rather than a verified current valuation.

Who else was involved?

The named participants included SMIC, Tsinghua Holdings, Shanghai Science & Technology Investment Corporation, Shanghai Jiading Investment Management Corporation, and Knight Capital, in addition to MediaTek. The fund was associated with the Shanghai City Government and SummitView Capital, which was described as its initiator and manager in contemporaneous accounts.

Was the investment completed?

EE Times reported that MediaTek’s planned investment was subject to government approvals. The available contemporaneous reports establish the announcement and its proposed terms, but do not confirm the final approval or closing of this exact commitment, nor its eventual return. MediaTek’s 2025 consolidated report lists later or similarly named Summitview-related partnerships, but does not conclusively connect them to the 2014 proposal. A later reference to a Summitview partnership therefore cannot, on its own, establish that this specific investment closed.

What the announcement means for personal investors

This was a corporate strategic investment announcement, not an offer to the public to buy into the fund. It may be useful as a historical example of a chipmaker seeking industry relationships and exposure to a semiconductor ecosystem, but the announcement alone says nothing about the fund’s realized performance or whether MediaTek achieved its stated goals.
