Why is McDonald’s suing the meat packers?
McDonald’s filed its federal antitrust complaint on October 4, 2024. It alleges that the companies restrained trade in beef in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act, including by limiting supply and coordinating market conduct. According to the complaint, the alleged conduct began at least around January 1, 2015, and continued through the filing date, causing direct purchasers such as McDonald’s to pay artificially inflated prices. What did McDonald’s ask the court to do?
McDonald’s says it bought beef directly and claims it was harmed by the alleged conduct. It requested a jury trial and monetary and injunctive relief. Those are remedies sought in the complaint, not damages awarded or orders entered by the court. Complaint and requested relief

Where does the case stand?
The complaint was filed in the Eastern District of New York on October 4, 2024. On October 16, 2024, the case was transferred to the District of Minnesota, where the docket directed that further filings be made in the existing In re Cattle and Beef Antitrust Litigation multidistrict docket. The reviewed sources do not establish the final disposition of McDonald’s specific claims. Related cattle-and-beef litigation has involved separate claims, court activity, and settlements, but those developments do not by themselves show that McDonald’s claims were settled or dismissed. Why separate beef-price claims from other cattle litigation?
Cases in the broader litigation can involve different plaintiffs and alleged injuries. McDonald’s says it was harmed as a direct purchaser paying for beef. Other proceedings may involve cattle sellers alleging harm to the prices they received, or indirect purchasers alleging a different kind of injury. A settlement or ruling in one group’s case should not be treated as an outcome in another without checking which claims and parties it actually covers.
