Why Marvel Rivals Developers Were Laid Off Despite the Game’s Success

NetEase confirmed in February 2025 that it reduced a Seattle-based design team supporting Marvel Rivals. The company cited organizational reasons and a desire to improve development efficiency. The change did not mean the entire game team was laid off: NetEase said the core team remained in Guangzhou. Later chart rankings and company disclosures showed the game was still performing strongly at specific points in 2025, but they do not establish why NetEase made its staffing decision.

What happened to the Marvel Rivals team?

On February 19, 2025, NetEase confirmed that it had adjusted the game’s development structure and reduced a Seattle design team that supported Marvel Rivals. NetEase described that group as part of a larger global design function. GeekWire reported that six U.S. employees were dismissed; that figure should not be treated as the total headcount of the Seattle team. GeekWire’s report and GameSpot’s coverage reported the company’s explanation and scope.

Thaddeus Sasser, whom VGC identified as a California-based game director, was among those publicly reported as affected. He described his team as having contributed to a successful new franchise. That is his account of the team’s work; NetEase’s statement is the source for the company’s organizational explanation. VGC reported the announcement and Sasser’s comments.

Was the entire Marvel Rivals development team laid off?

No. NetEase said the affected group was a Seattle design team within a broader global design function. Its statement, reproduced by GameSpot, said the core development team remained in Guangzhou, China, led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen. NetEase also said it remained committed to investing in the game. That is the company’s assurance, not an independently audited commitment.

The distinction matters: reports of layoffs among a supporting design group do not establish that the game’s full development operation stopped or was dismissed.

Why did NetEase make the cuts?

NetEase’s stated reasons were organizational and efficiency-related. A spokesperson told VGC: “We recently made the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals’ development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game.” The spokesperson said the change resulted in a reduction of the Seattle design team.

The public explanation does not establish a more specific motive. The reporting does not show that the decision was directly caused by the game’s revenue, a company-wide withdrawal from North America, or geopolitical conditions. Those explanations should not be presented as fact.

How successful was Marvel Rivals at the time?

The layoffs drew attention because the game had reached large launch milestones and later appeared high on Steam’s seller charts. Those are different measures from one another, and none alone explains NetEase’s staffing decision.

  • Launch milestones: GameSpot reported that the game reached 10 million players in its first 72 hours and 20 million the following week, based on launch-period announcements in 2024. These are player counts, not sales figures. GameSpot’s report covers the milestones alongside the layoffs.
  • April 2025 Steam ranking: NetEase said Marvel Rivals topped Steam’s global top sellers chart shortly after its Season 2 update. A chart position is not a disclosed sales or revenue total. NetEase’s filing published through HKEXnews reported the ranking.
  • July 2025 Steam ranking: NetEase reported that around the July 17 Summer Party Event, the game ranked No. 2 on Steam’s global top-sellers chart and No. 1 in the U.S. These are dated chart positions, not a measure of current performance or standalone revenue. NetEase’s 2025 interim results reported these positions.
  • Company-level revenue context: NetEase attributed some year-over-year growth in online-games net revenue in Q2 2025 to newly launched games, including Marvel Rivals. It did not disclose a standalone revenue figure for this game in that statement. The interim results filing provides the company-level context.

What the reports do—and do not—show

The established facts are narrow: NetEase confirmed a Seattle design-team reduction in February 2025, stated that the change was for organizational reasons and development efficiency, and said the Guangzhou core team remained in place. Later company disclosures cited strong chart rankings and included the game among newly launched titles contributing to online-games revenue growth.

These facts can coexist. A game’s success at a given moment does not prove that every supporting team or location will retain the same structure. The available statements do not establish a direct causal link between Marvel Rivals’ performance and the Seattle staffing decision, nor do they disclose the affected group’s full headcount or the game’s standalone revenue.
