Mickey Rooney’s 2014 will reportedly left his estate, estimated at $18,000 in an initial court filing, to his stepson Mark Rooney and Mark’s wife. It excluded Rooney’s eight surviving children and his estranged wife, Jan Rooney. That reported probate estimate is not a measure of his lifetime earnings or net worth.

Who received Mickey Rooney’s estate?

Contemporaneous reports about the will filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court said Rooney named his stepson, Mark Rooney, and Mark’s wife as beneficiaries. Rooney signed the will on March 11, 2014, a few weeks before his death. The initial filing estimated the estate at $18,000, according to The Guardian.

Did Mickey Rooney disinherit his children?

Yes. Reports said the will excluded Rooney’s eight surviving children as well as his estranged wife, Jan Rooney. Inside Edition reproduced this sentence from the filed will: “I have intentionally omitted from this will any provision for any of my heirs.” (Inside Edition, April 9, 2014.)

Rooney’s attorney attributed the decision to Rooney’s belief that his children were in better financial circumstances than he was. That is the attorney’s explanation of Rooney’s reasoning, not an independently verified account of his motive.

What does the $18,000 figure mean?

The $18,000 was the estate estimate reported in the initial probate filing. It should not be read as Rooney’s total lifetime earnings, a definitive accounting of every asset, or proof of his complete net worth at death. His long career and the reported probate figure describe different things: one is a reported value for the estate in the court filing, the other would require a broader accounting not established by the cited reports.

Was the $2.8 million debt part of the inheritance?

No. TIME reported that, in an earlier lawsuit, Rooney’s stepson agreed he owed Rooney $2.8 million. That figure concerns the lawsuit, not the amount inherited under the will, cash shown to have been left at death, or a payment the estate is known to have collected. (TIME.)

Did Jan Rooney challenge the will?

Jan Rooney reportedly filed a probate challenge in May 2014, according to CityNews’ Associated Press report. The cited reporting establishes that a challenge was filed, but does not establish its final disposition; it therefore does not support saying that she won or lost.
