Rising car sales do not guarantee rising share prices: investors value expected profits, margins, market position and the price already built into a stock—not just the number of vehicles sold. Upstox reported that through the October 8, 2026 close, Maruti Suzuki shares were down 32.7% year to date, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) 25.8%, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (PV) 25.6%. The explanations below reflect Upstox’s reported analysis, not independently established proof that any one factor caused the declines.
The apparent contradiction is real but not unusual. India’s passenger-vehicle market had a strong quarter, helped in part by lower GST and softer financing costs, while investors weighed company-specific risks and future earnings. The GST cut could support demand without eliminating cost pressures, changing vehicle mix or guaranteeing that profits would grow as quickly as sales.

Why can auto shares fall when car sales are rising?
A vehicle sale contributes to a company’s results only after costs and other expenses are accounted for. Investors therefore look beyond unit volumes to the profit earned per vehicle, the mix of models sold, input and logistics costs, and whether those results can continue. They also compare expected results with what the share price already assumes.
That is why a market-wide sales record and a stock-market decline can happen at the same time. A GST reduction or easier financing may encourage purchases, but it does not necessarily offset higher commodity costs, repair operational disruptions, or resolve concerns about a company’s competitive position. Nor does a strong quarter automatically make a stock attractive if investors had expected even more.

What the sales figures show—and what they do not
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported 1.27 million passenger vehicles sold in Q1 FY2026-27, up 25.9% year over year. Utility vehicles accounted for about 68% of passenger-vehicle sales. SIAM attributed demand support to lower GST rates, softer financing costs, a low base and new models. The figures establish that the market was strong; they do not show that each manufacturer’s sales or profits rose at the same rate.
SIAM President Shailesh Chandra said passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers posted their highest-ever Q1 sales, while all vehicle segments, including two-wheelers, recorded their highest-ever exports during the quarter. In the same July 15, 2026 release, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon cited supportive domestic demand, lower GST, softer financing costs, a low base effect and new models, while noting headwinds from disruptions in West Asia.

The share-price figures use a different measure and time window. Upstox’s year-to-date comparison runs through the October 8, 2026 close; it is not a comparison of quarterly vehicle sales or a calculation of how much the GST cut changed each stock.
How the three stocks differ
| Company | Reported 2026 share move | Business context | Overhangs described by Upstox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki | Down 32.7% year to date through the October 8, 2026 close, according to Upstox. | Record FY2025-26 total sales, but Q4 net profit fell year over year. In Q3, Maruti reported record total sales and said the market recovery was led by small cars. | Market-share and vehicle-mix concerns, delayed EV entry, commodity and logistics cost pressure, and profit-taking after strong prior-year returns. |
| Mahindra & Mahindra | Down 25.8% year to date through the October 8, 2026 close, according to Upstox. | FY2026 consolidated revenue grew 25% and PAT grew 32%; PAT growth was 35% excluding the prior year’s land-sale gain. Auto and farm revenue grew 27%. | Commodity-cost pressure and profit-booking after earlier share-price gains, as described by Upstox. |
| Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles | Down 25.6% year to date through the October 8, 2026 close, according to Upstox. | The reported explanation centers partly on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) exposure and operational disruption. | JLR weakness, a cyberattack-related production halt, supply constraints and the Middle East conflict, as described by Upstox. |
The share moves and company-specific explanations in this comparison are from Upstox’s October 9, 2026 report. The financial and industry figures are from the named company and SIAM releases. The explanation is not a quantified breakdown of how much each factor contributed to each stock’s decline.

Why Maruti Suzuki shares fell despite record sales
Record full-year sales did not prevent a weaker profit quarter
Maruti reported total sales of 2,422,713 units for FY2025-26 and record net sales for the year. Yet its Q4 net profit fell 6.9% year over year; the company said the decline was primarily due to a mark-to-market impact. The contrast shows why record annual volume is not enough to infer that every quarter’s reported profit will rise.
GST helped demand, but costs and vehicle mix still mattered
Maruti said GST reform contributed to a Q3 FY2025-26 market recovery led by small cars. It reported record Q3 total sales of 667,769 units, while also disclosing a one-time ₹5,939 million provision for new labour codes that affected net profit. Upstox’s separate explanation for the share decline points to commodity and logistics costs and concern about market share and mix as buyers increasingly favored utility vehicles.

Upstox also cited Maruti’s delayed entry into electric vehicles as a concern. That is a reported interpretation of investor expectations, not evidence that EV timing alone explains the share-price move. A strong small-car recovery and a broader market tilted toward utility vehicles can coexist; the relevant question for earnings is how each company’s own sales mix and costs translate into profit.

Its reported annual earnings were growing, not collapsing
M&M’s May 5, 2026 results release reported FY2026 consolidated revenue growth of 25% and profit after tax (PAT) growth of 32%. Excluding the previous year’s land-sale gain, PAT growth was 35%; auto and farm revenue grew 27%. Those figures do not support describing M&M as having suffered an FY2026 profit collapse.

Investors can still react to costs and prior gains
Upstox emphasized commodity-cost pressure and profit-booking after earlier share-price gains. Profit-booking is a possible market explanation: investors who have benefited from a prior rise may sell some holdings. It does not, by itself, establish a deterioration in the company’s operating results. A share can decline even while reported earnings grow if investors reassess future costs, expectations or the valuation they are willing to pay.

Upstox’s explanation for Tata Motors PV placed more weight on company-specific and international exposure. It cited weakness at JLR, a cyberattack-related production halt, supply constraints and the Middle East conflict. These issues differ from the mix and market-share concerns described for Maruti and the commodity-cost and profit-taking explanation for M&M.
A strong Indian passenger-vehicle market does not necessarily resolve operational or overseas business risks for a group with international exposure. The figures available here do not independently establish how much each cited disruption affected Tata Motors PV’s results or share price, so they should be read as reported explanations rather than a measured causal decomposition.

SIAM and Maruti both described GST reform as supportive of demand or recovery. That is compatible with falling shares: a tax change can encourage purchases without ensuring higher margins, stronger profits at every company, or a share-price gain. Its effect on a stock also depends on which models sell, their economics, the costs required to produce and deliver them, and what investors had already expected.
These sources do not isolate the GST cut’s causal effect on any of the three stocks. They support the narrower conclusion that demand was strong and that company-level earnings and investor concerns could still differ.
Quick Recap
How to read the decline without confusing sales and returns
- Check the metric: vehicle sales are operating volumes; share returns reflect investors’ changing expectations about future cash flows and risk.
- Separate company results from market totals: a growing passenger-vehicle market does not guarantee that every manufacturer gains share or sells the same mix of vehicles.
- Look at profit as well as volume: Maruti’s record annual sales alongside a 6.9% year-over-year Q4 profit decline illustrates why the two measures should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Keep company-specific explanations distinct: Upstox described different concerns for each issuer, rather than one uniform reason for all three declines.
- Respect the measurement date: the reported share declines stop at the October 8, 2026 close; they are not current prices or a forecast.
