Mario Kart World launched in the United States with a $79.99 suggested retail price, which is why it is often described as an $80 game. That price is specific to the game and market: Nintendo also listed Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99 in its April 2025 U.S. launch pricing notice. Switch 2 games do not all cost $80, and the price you pay can depend on the title, format, retailer and date.
What does “$80 Switch 2 game” mean?
It refers most directly to Mario Kart World. Nintendo announced a U.S. suggested retail price (MSRP) of $79.99 for the game at its June 2025 launch, in both physical and digital formats. Calling that “$80” is a rounded description of the $79.99 price, not a separate price point. Nintendo’s launch announcement is the source for the game’s launch price and availability.
The price is not a universal Switch 2 game tariff. In its April 2025 U.S. pricing notice, Nintendo listed Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. These figures are launch-era U.S. suggested retail prices; retailers set their own prices, and current offers can differ. Nintendo’s April 2025 notice lists the launch pricing.
How much did the console and bundle cost at launch?
Nintendo’s U.S. launch-era suggested prices put the Switch 2 system at $449.99 and a system-plus-game bundle at $499.99. The bundle included a digital copy of Mario Kart World. These are historical launch MSRPs, not claims about current retailer prices or availability.

| Launch item | U.S. suggested retail price | What was included |

| Nintendo Switch 2 system | $449.99 | System |
| Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | System and a digital copy of Mario Kart World |
Both figures are Nintendo’s U.S. launch-era MSRPs from 2025, not a current price comparison. To decide whether a bundle saves money now, compare the seller’s current bundle price with the current prices of the system and game bought separately, and confirm that the bundle’s included game is digital.
Why did Nintendo price Mario Kart World at $79.99?
Nintendo’s reviewed launch announcement gives the $79.99 MSRP but does not provide a detailed, title-specific explanation for setting it. It would be speculation to attribute that price to development costs, tariffs or a broad industry-wide pricing shift without supporting evidence.

Nintendo later explained a different policy change: beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 have a digital MSRP different from the physical edition, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Nintendo says the distinction reflects the different costs of producing and distributing each format and gives players more choice. That explanation concerns the later physical-versus-digital pricing policy; it is not Nintendo’s stated rationale for Mario Kart World’s 2025 price. Nintendo’s pricing-policy support page describes the change.

- Game: Check the specific title’s price rather than assuming every Switch 2 game costs $79.99.
- Format: For new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 covered by the May 2026 policy, compare the digital MSRP with the physical edition’s MSRP.
- Seller and date: Nintendo says retailers set their own prices, so verify the live price and availability with the seller before purchasing.
- Bundle contents: Confirm whether a system bundle includes a physical game or a digital copy, and compare current total prices if you are deciding between a bundle and separate purchases.
Nintendo describes Mario Kart World as offering Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Free Roam and Battle modes, with local or online play; its announcement says races support up to 24 drivers and local split-screen supports up to four players on one system. Those are Nintendo’s feature descriptions, not independent test findings. They may help you judge whether the game’s price fits your plans, but they do not establish a reason for its MSRP.
