The recommendations below are attributed to those publications—not presented as one shared ranking—so you can compare options by finish, skin type, shade range, and price while checking current availability.
What a cushion foundation is—and how to choose one
A cushion foundation is liquid foundation held in a saturated sponge inside a compact. Its included puff picks up the product and presses it onto the skin, making the format portable and suited to controlled layers and touch-ups. Allure quotes makeup artist Amanda Gabbard describing the packaging as convenient and the layers as easy to build; that is her assessment, not a guarantee of performance for every formula.
Before choosing, consider the finish and coverage you want, how the formula may work with your skincare and other makeup, and whether its shade and undertone are available where you shop. A large shade count does not guarantee a match for every undertone or market.

Recent coverage also identifies limited deeper shade options as a continuing issue across many cushion ranges, while noting that some brands have expanded their offerings. Check the current shade listing for your market and, where possible, compare undertones and swatches rather than relying on shade count alone. The Looker discusses the category caveat.
What published testing can—and cannot—tell you
The guides describe different processes, so their picks should not be combined into a single editor-tested ranking. Allure says its guide drew on multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists, evaluating ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. Allure describes that approach.

Glamour says it tested more than 15 cushion foundations in 2026, with each product worn for at least a week. Its stated criteria included fading or full-day wear, buildable coverage, compatibility with skincare or makeup, ingredients, packaging, and shade range; it also consulted market research at Korean beauty retailers and sought input from editors, contributors, and makeup artists. Those details describe Glamour’s process, not a test of every product in this comparison. Glamour.
The cited guides support a useful shortlist, but they do not establish a nine-product lineup, one common protocol, or comparable results for all nine products in the title. Treat each selection as a publication-specific recommendation.

How to apply cushion foundation
- Pick up a small amount. Press the puff into the cushion lightly; start with less product than you think you need.
- Press where coverage matters most. J. Brandon Correa, a YSL Beauty national artist quoted by The Looker, recommends pressing rather than swiping and beginning in the center of the face or another area needing coverage.
- Tap outward, then build gradually. Diffuse the product toward the edges of the face. Add another thin layer only where you want more coverage.
- Use the puff’s shape deliberately. Correa recommends its broad face for larger areas and its edge around the nose and under the eyes.
- Powder selectively if needed. Claudia Betancur, a L’Oréal Paris “League of Experts” makeup artist quoted by The Looker, advises using a small amount only on areas that need it, such as the nose or T-zone. This is an attributed technique, not a rule for every skin type or formula.
