Why Maria Klawe Called Satya Nadella’s 2014 “Karma” Gaffe One of the Best Things That Happened to Microsoft

Maria Klawe, then a Microsoft board member, later described Satya Nadella’s 2014 “good karma” remarks about women asking for raises as “one of the best things that ever happened for Microsoft.” She meant that the public exchange became a learning moment for Nadella and other leaders—not that one incident alone caused Microsoft’s later success.

What Nadella said at the 2014 Grace Hopper conference

At the 2014 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in Phoenix, Harvey Mudd College president Maria Klawe asked Nadella what advice he would give women who felt uncomfortable asking for a pay raise. Nadella said they could trust the system to provide the right raises over time. He also suggested that not asking might be a “superpower,” adding, “that’s good karma.” GeekWire’s 2019 retrospective and The Guardian’s contemporaneous account describe the exchange.

Klawe disagreed immediately. In CNN’s transcript, she tells him, “This is one of the few things I disagree with you on.” She argued that women and other underrepresented groups should research appropriate compensation and practice asking for raises, promotions, responsibility, or resources. That was her advice, not a promise that asking always produces a particular outcome.

How Nadella responded

Nadella apologized publicly and in an email to Microsoft employees. GeekWire reproduced his statement: “I answered that question completely wrong.” He said he supported equal pay for equal work and programs to bring more women into technology, and endorsed Klawe’s advice: “If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask.”

In his 2017 book Hit Refresh, Nadella later reflected on the incident, writing, “In some ways, I’m glad I messed up in such a public forum because it helped me confront an unconscious bias that I didn’t know I had, and it helped me find a new sense of empathy for the great women in my life and at my company.” This passage is quoted by GeekWire; the book offers Nadella’s personal retrospective, not an independent account of the event.

Why Klawe later saw the episode as beneficial

In a 2019 interview with GeekWire, Klawe said Microsoft leaders returned from the Grace Hopper conference with a new understanding of diversity and inclusion. She connected that learning to her view that the episode had been beneficial for the company. Her “one of the best things” judgment is a retrospective assessment by a participant, not evidence that the exchange by itself caused later changes or company performance.

Klawe also praised Microsoft’s success under Nadella’s leadership in that interview. Those were her comments in 2019, not an independently established ranking. In a later Big Technology Podcast transcript, she described the exchange as a learning opportunity and recalled believing that Nadella and senior colleagues took steps on diversity and inclusion afterward. The transcript also records her disagreement with then-board chair John Thompson about whether the episode harmed or helped Microsoft’s reputation; it is Klawe’s recollection, not independent confirmation of private board discussions.

The workforce context was historical, not current

The Guardian reported in October 2014 that women made up less than 30% of Microsoft’s roughly 100,000-person global workforce. That figure describes the company at the time of the remarks and should not be read as a current workforce statistic.

What the episode does—and does not—show about asking for a raise

The exchange was about advice given to women who felt uncomfortable negotiating pay. Klawe’s practical recommendation was to research an appropriate salary and rehearse how to ask; Nadella later explicitly endorsed it. The episode illustrates why relying on a compensation system to correct pay without speaking up was advice he came to regret. It does not establish how any particular employer will respond to a request, or guarantee a raise.
