Re:

Why Lyft’s CEO Says ‘It Would Be Insane’ Not to Go All In on Bikeshare

Lyft's September 2024 decision to keep and run its bikeshare business, what the reported ride numbers and restructuring costs mean, and what remains unverified.

In September 2024, Lyft chose to run and build its micromobility business itself rather than sell it. CEO David Risher said that not doing so would be “insane,” pointing to fast growth in e-bike rides. The company’s stated direction was a standardized, station-based (docked) bikeshare system rather than dockless bikes and scooters. For personal-finance readers, the decision is less about bicycles than about how a ride-hail company chose to spend on a capital-heavy, city-contract business, and what that choice does and does not tell you about its finances.

What Risher meant by “insane”

The remark came in a TechCrunch report by Rebecca Bellan, published September 4, 2024. Lyft had reviewed whether to sell its micromobility assets or keep operating them. Risher’s account favored keeping them. He told TechCrunch: “E-bikes in particular are growing so fast globally. It would be insane not to take it on ourselves.” The word refers to walking away from the business, not to any particular bet on e-bikes alone.

The numbers behind the decision, and what they do not measure

Most of the figures in the report describe ride volume or Lyft as a whole. They are not a measure of how profitable the bike business is.

Metric Figure reported Qualification
Lyft e-bike ride growth Up 65% year over year Through August 2024; as stated by Risher in TechCrunch’s September 2024 report
E-bike share of rides About half of total rides “In the context discussed” in the report; no segment definition given
Combined Lyft micromobility and ride-hail rides 709 million in 2023 Reported by TechCrunch, 2024
Bike and scooter share rides 56.7 million in 2023 About 8% of the 709 million combined rides; reported by TechCrunch, 2024
Lyft revenue, Q2 2024 $1.4 billion Company-wide, not micromobility segment revenue
Lyft operating result, Q2 2024 $27 million operating loss; $5 million net income Company-wide figures for the quarter, not bike-specific
Micromobility revenue Not stated Lyft did not break out this figure in the report

Ride counts tell you how much the service is used. They do not tell you how much money it earns. Lyft’s 2024 disclosures did not separate micromobility revenue, so a reader cannot infer the bike business’s margin from the report.

Why Lyft preferred docked systems

Risher’s second notable statement explains the operating model: “We’re really focused on the docked version because it frankly helps cities organize themselves better.” In the company’s framing, stations give cities control over where bikes sit, how streets are used, and how a long-term partnership is structured. The report says Lyft planned to move away from the dockless services it had offered.

Docked versus dockless

  • Docked (station-based): Bikes return to defined locations. Cities can plan streets around them, and the contract tends to look more like infrastructure than a free-floating app.
  • Dockless: Vehicles are parked anywhere within a service zone. It is more flexible for riders, but it is harder for cities to manage and was the model Lyft said it would reduce.

The report does not show that docked systems are universally more profitable or more sustainable. It records Lyft’s reasoning and plans.

Supplier versus operator

Lyft was combining two roles. PBSC, which sells bikeshare-as-a-service to cities and local operators, was being integrated with eight bike and scooter share programs that Lyft already ran. The combined unit was to operate under the Lyft Urban Solutions name. Owning both the technology supplier and the operator means Lyft carries the cost of running the programs, but also keeps the contract revenue and operating data.

The restructuring: costs and claimed savings

Lyft’s filing, as reported by TechCrunch, put restructuring and related charges at $34 million to $46 million. Of that, $32 million to $42 million was tied to asset disposal. Lyft also said it would update hardware and software toward standardization.

The savings side is an estimate. Risher said: “We estimate that the ongoing benefit to the business of this restructuring is going to be on the order of $20 million a year, and it will be a net contributor to the business.” That is a company projection from September 2024. The report does not confirm whether it was achieved.

Service changes the report described

The report said Lyft planned to discontinue scooter service in Washington, D.C., and bike and scooter services in Denver, while exploring other options in Denver. Lyft would also keep offering dockless scooter booking through its app by partnering with Spin and Bird. These were plans as of 2024, not a verified account of current availability in any city.

What this means for your money

  • If you ride: The operator name on a bike and in the app tells you who runs the program. Whether a city is docked or dockless determines where you can end a trip. Pricing and membership terms are set locally and were not part of the report.
  • If you pay city taxes or fees: Docked systems usually involve upfront equipment and installation spending. The report does not disclose any city contract values, so you cannot judge from it whether a given program is cost-effective.
  • If you own Lyft stock: The $20 million annual benefit is one estimate among many factors in a company with $1.4 billion in quarterly revenue. The bike business is not separately disclosed, so it should not be treated as a value driver on the evidence here.

What is and is not established today

The report is a snapshot from September 2024. It establishes what Lyft said it would do and the figures it reported at that time. It does not establish whether the e-bike growth continued, whether the $20 million benefit materialized, or which cities still have Lyft-run programs. For current numbers, check Lyft’s own quarterly results and its investor disclosures, and your city transportation department for the operator of local bikeshare.

The useful takeaway is narrow: a company that calls a decision “insane” to reverse is betting that a standardized, city-contracted service will outlast its costs. Whether that bet paid off is a question the 2024 report cannot answer.
