He said his 2019 departure from Khosla was driven by the San Francisco–to–Sand Hill Road commute and the firm’s in-office culture. His account of the return began with a conversation about starting his own fund—not a stated desire to join a larger one.
Why did Keith Rabois leave Khosla Ventures in 2019?
Rabois said the commute and office expectations were the reason he left Khosla Ventures for Founders Fund in 2019. In a January 2024 interview with TechCrunch, he described Khosla’s pre-pandemic culture as strongly centered on one office and said employees were expected to be there three or four days a week.
“The real reason is really simple. I hated coming down from SF to Sand Hill Road,” Rabois said, describing the commute and the office policy at the time.
His explanation was about the work arrangement, not an explicitly stated falling-out with Khosla Ventures.

What led him back to Khosla Ventures?
Rabois told TechCrunch that a conversation with former Khosla colleague Samir Kaul about the possibility of starting his own fund led to dinner with Vinod Khosla and then a discussion about returning. The Information also reported that Rabois described Khosla’s culture as a better fit. These are explanations attributed to Rabois and the reporting, rather than a formal statement from Khosla Ventures about the hiring decision.
Was the move about fund size or money?
In the TechCrunch interview, Rabois said fund size was not why he returned. He also said he supported Founders Fund’s decision to reduce the size of its newest fund. TechCrunch reported in 2024 that Khosla Ventures had closed $3.1 billion across funds in November 2023; that reported fundraising figure is context, not evidence that fund size prompted Rabois’s move.

Yes. Khosla Ventures’ team page lists Rabois as a Managing Director and summarizes investments he led while at Founders Fund. The original headline’s “just left” describes a January 2024 event, not a recent departure.
A separate development came later: in September 2026, TechCrunch reported that Rabois had relocated to the East Coast and that Khosla Ventures planned its first office outside Sand Hill Road, in New York. The report connected the relocation to family logistics; it is distinct from his stated reasons for returning in 2024.
