Contemporaneous reporting said Jordan Henderson deferred his Al-Ettifaq wages and had not received them before leaving Saudi Arabia in January 2024. The report linked the deferral to avoiding UK tax, but that explanation has not been independently verified. Al-Ettifaq said the contract ended by mutual agreement, and the Saudi Pro League said the financial conditions for cancellation had been agreed; neither disclosed whether Henderson ultimately received or forfeited the deferred money.
What was reported about Henderson’s wages?
A contemporaneous report attributed to Telegraph Sport said Henderson had deferred salary payments while at Al-Ettifaq and had not yet received his Saudi wages before his departure. It also reported that people close to him thought he might never be paid for the six months. These were press claims, not terms confirmed by a publicly available contract, payment record or final settlement. The report, carried by Yahoo, should therefore be read as an account of what was reported at the time—not proof that the club refused to pay him or that he ultimately received nothing.

BBC Sport described Henderson’s Al-Ettifaq contract as a three-year deal worth a reported £700,000 a week. The club did not confirm that figure in its termination announcement, so it should not be treated as an established salary. BBC Sport’s report also does not establish how much was paid, deferred or included in any settlement. A total cannot reliably be calculated from the reported weekly figure and his roughly six-month spell: the public materials do not set out the contract period used for payments, bonuses, deferral terms or settlement accounting.
Was the deferral connected to UK tax?
The Telegraph Sport report linked the wage deferral to avoiding UK tax. That is a reported rationale, not a verified explanation of Henderson’s personal tax position or the contract arrangement. The public materials reviewed do not include a tax opinion, contract clause or payment record confirming the explanation. It would be inaccurate to state as fact that Henderson was unpaid because of a proven tax strategy.

What did Al-Ettifaq and the Saudi Pro League confirm?
Al-Ettifaq announced a mutual termination
On January 18, 2024, Al-Ettifaq said the club and Henderson had “mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract with the club with immediate effect.” The announcement did not disclose settlement terms or address deferred wages. Club president Samer Al Misehal said the quick decision, “without any delay or further distraction,” was believed to be in the best interests of both the club and Henderson. Al-Ettifaq’s announcement confirms how the contract ended, but not the final financial outcome.
The league said cancellation terms had been agreed
Saudi Pro League vice-chairman and interim CEO Saad Allazeez said the league had given Henderson support and respect and that “the financial conditions for cancelling the contract had been agreed.” He described departures where a player does not adjust or settle, adding that this can affect performance and cause frustration. His comments support the conclusion that cancellation involved agreed financial conditions; they do not specify what those conditions were or whether they included payment, waiver or treatment of deferred wages. What is known about the final amount?
The sources do not establish how much Henderson ultimately received, if anything, for his Saudi spell. Al-Ettifaq did not publish a settlement breakdown, the league did not identify the terms, and the reported wage deferral does not show what happened after termination. “Had not yet received” before departure is not the same as “was never paid.” Nor does a mutual termination by itself prove either payment or forfeiture.
Henderson joined Ajax after leaving Al-Ettifaq. BBC reported a two-and-a-half-year deal, while the Associated Press said Ajax did not release financial details. At a January 19, 2024 press conference, Henderson reflected on the move: “In life, you know, you can, if you want to, call them regrets or mistakes. You can call them that,” adding that mistakes matter if you do not learn from them. Those remarks did not clarify the Saudi contract’s financial settlement. The Associated Press report.
