Karthika VK resigned as publisher at HarperCollins India in October 2016, after joining the company in 2006. The departure prompted questions about why she chose to leave, but the contemporaneous reports did not establish a reason. Later coverage placed her final day at HarperCollins on 19 November 2016 and reported in January 2018 that she was starting a boutique imprint at Westland Books.

What happened when Karthika VK resigned?

Scroll reported on 25 October 2016 that Karthika VK had resigned from her publisher post at HarperCollins India. She had joined the company in 2006, making her tenure roughly ten years. Scroll’s report presented the news as a shock move; that description reflects the reception of the departure, not a confirmed explanation for it.

HarperCollins India CEO Ananth Padmanabhan praised her relationships with authors, agents and publishers in India and internationally, and said she would be missed. Publishers Weekly reproduced the company statement, which focused on her contribution and the team she left behind. It did not say why she resigned.

Why did she leave HarperCollins?

The reason was not confirmed in the reports available at the time. Scroll raised possible strategic differences and business pressures as interpretations, while noting that key company figures were not commenting. Those possibilities should not be treated as an established motive or as the company’s explanation.

Scroll also noted that Ananth Padmanabhan had become CEO in October 2015, replacing PM Sukumar, who had left after 11 years. The timing provides company context, but the reporting does not show that the leadership change caused Karthika VK’s decision.

What did the reports say about publishing pressures?

Scroll’s 2016 feature framed the departure against tensions it saw between literary and commercial approaches to English-language publishing in India. It discussed demographic shifts, interest in practical or entertainment-oriented books, and pressure on publishers to release enough titles and produce bestsellers. This was the article’s analysis of the industry environment, not a documented account of HarperCollins’ internal decision-making or a definitive description of the entire Indian book market.

The same Scroll feature said average print runs had fallen to 3,000 or fewer copies. The article did not identify an underlying study or data provider for that figure. It is therefore best understood as a claim made in Scroll’s 2016 report, not as an independently verified or current industry statistic.

What happened after her resignation?

A Scroll interview published in November 2016 identified 19 November as Karthika VK’s final day at HarperCollins. In January 2018, Scroll reported that she was starting a boutique imprint at Westland Books. These later reports add career context, but they do not retrospectively confirm why she left HarperCollins.
