Breitling SA agreed to acquire Universal Geneve SA on 12 December 2023 for disclosed consideration of CHF 60 million, subject to adjustments. That figure covered the company/share disposal—not a separate watch-inventory purchase. The transaction matters because Universal Genève is a historic Swiss watch brand founded in 1894, known for models including the Compax, Tri-Compax and Polerouter.
What did Breitling acquire, and when?
A Stelux Holdings announcement filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange records an agreement dated 12 December 2023 under which Breitling SA would acquire Universal Geneve SA. Stelux described the target as a Swiss company holding Universal Genève trademarks and related digital assets; the target was wholly owned by the seller’s group at the time of the announcement. The disclosed total consideration was CHF 60 million, subject to adjustments under the sale agreement. Stelux Holdings’ 12 December 2023 announcement identifies Breitling SA as the purchaser.
The target’s stated principal activities included trademark licensing, watch supply-chain management and distribution, and international warranty and after-sales services for retail watches. The filing describes the agreed transaction and related completion-dependent arrangements; it does not establish an unqualified completion date. Accordingly, the precise, source-backed description is that Breitling SA agreed to acquire the company in December 2023.
How much did Breitling pay?
The filing disclosed CHF 60 million in total consideration, subject to adjustment, for the disposal of Universal Geneve SA. It separately reported a CHF 5 million total purchase price, also subject to adjustment, for branded watch inventory held by the authorized retailer. These were distinct arrangements with different scopes; CHF 60 million was not the price of the inventory.

The same filing reported that 4,713 watches were then offered for retail sale and 673 additional watches—including watches without bracelets and incomplete watches—were not then offered for sale. Those are figures reported in the 2023 announcement, not a measure of present stock or current availability.
Who owns Universal Genève now?
The legal buyer named in the Stelux filing is Breitling SA. Universal Genève’s own history describes Partners Group and CVC Capital Partners as acquirers in its 2023 “new chapter” entry. These accounts provide different kinds of context: the filing identifies the purchaser in the legal transaction, while the brand timeline names the investment firms associated with the relaunch chapter. Universal Genève’s official history and the filing are the primary sources for those descriptions.

The Federation of the Swiss watch industry FH reported on 11 January 2024 that the brands were set to live side by side while retaining their individuality, and that Breitling aimed to restore Universal Genève. That is contemporaneous reporting of the stated ambition, not confirmation of a particular current release or launch schedule. FH’s January 2024 report gives that contemporary framing.

The official history also highlights the caliber 66 automatic movement and caliber 74 quartz movement. The agreement puts a historic name and its associated trademarks and digital assets under a transaction led by Breitling SA, while the separately disclosed inventory arrangement addressed a specific pool of retailer-held watches. Neither the 2023 filing nor the cited January 2024 industry report establishes a current Universal Genève collection, retail stock, launch date, or present-day prices. A heritage model such as the Polerouter is a useful point of reference for understanding the brand, but these sources do not establish where one is currently available or what an example should cost.
