Gygax Jr. and rebrand as Top Secret NWO. The split followed public controversy over Gygax Jr.’s comments on race and gender identity and his criticism of Wizards of the Coast’s handling of racism in Dungeons & Dragons, according to Gizmodo’s July 1, 2021 report.
Why did Elliot’s TSR Games distance itself?
Gizmodo linked the break to remarks Ernie G. Gygax Jr. made in a June 23, 2021 SciFi4Me interview. The report described comments about race and gender identity, as well as Gygax Jr.’s criticism of Wizards of the Coast’s approach to racism in D&D. It also recounted the response from the other publisher using the TSR Games name. These are details and characterizations reported by Gizmodo, not independent findings about the participants’ motives.
In the interview, Gygax Jr. described his aim as: “All I’m trying to do is fill the strip mine, allow this fertile soil to produce more games and products again.” Gizmodo reported that an apology thread was later deleted; its account of that thread relied on screenshots the author said she had seen, rather than a still-available post.
Which TSR Games made the announcement?
The name referred to two distinct publishers in the 2021 story. Jayson Elliot’s company made the distancing announcement. The other was a separate TSR Games publisher associated with Gygax Jr. and Justin LaNasa. Keeping those identities distinct matters: Elliot’s statement was not a statement from the LaNasa-associated publisher.

What did Elliot’s company announce?
Elliot’s company said it would rebrand as Top Secret NWO, a name drawn from an upcoming game. At the same time, it said it was “not abandoning” the name “TSR Games” generally, but would not license that name to the other publisher or “work with them in any fashion,” as quoted in Gizmodo’s account of its social-media statement. The report describes the announcement as a break in business ties, not as a transfer of ownership of the TSR name.
How did others respond?
The controversy also drew statements from people and organizations beyond the two publishers. Gizmodo reported that Gen Con stated its position concerning its 2021 convention. It also reported that Luke Gygax said he, his family, and Gary Con were not involved in his brother’s work. Luke characterized the other publisher as a “quick nostalgia money grab based on my father’s name and not much else”; that was his opinion, not an independently established description.
