Japan Airlines chose Airbus’s A350 in 2013 as the next-generation aircraft for its long- and medium-distance fleet, including the Boeing 777s it planned to begin replacing in 2019. JAL said the decision followed a broad evaluation of safety, performance, quality, economics, passenger comfort and environmental impact. It did not disclose a single decisive factor or comparative bid scores, so the public record supports a multi-factor explanation—not a claim that one feature or offer won the contest.
What JAL ordered—and what it planned to replace
On October 7, 2013, Japan Airlines’ board approved a firm order for 31 Airbus A350s: 18 A350-900s and 13 A350-1000s. The agreement also included options for 25 additional aircraft. JAL described the order as its first Airbus aircraft order since the integration of Japan Airlines and Japan Air System; Airbus called it the first A350 order from a Japanese carrier. JAL’s announcement records the order and the airline’s explanation.
JAL president Yoshiharu Ueki said the airline had studied replacements for its Boeing 777 fleet since the previous year. The need was progressive rather than an immediate fleet-wide switch: JAL expected renewal to begin in 2019. Its FY2013 Q2 investor presentation described the A350s as replacements for long-range aircraft, with entry into service from 2019 and gradual replacement of aging aircraft over about six years. The presentation compared the A350-900 and -1000 with the 777-200ER, 777-300ER and 787-8. The presentation’s comparison used capacity, range, length and engine type; those figures describe JAL’s 2013 planning context, not universal current specifications.
Why the A350 fit JAL’s stated evaluation
Ueki said JAL chose the A350 after “comprehensively evaluating safety, performance, quality, economy, passenger comfort, impacts on the global environment, and such.” The airline’s investor presentation also emphasized safety performance, inflight comfort and operational efficiency. These are the reasons JAL publicly named; the announcement does not establish that the A350 scored better than every alternative on each measure.

The decision was also framed by fleet and business needs. JAL cited the operating environment, passenger-demand trends, competition, aircraft-market trends and its plans to use additional flight slots in the Tokyo area. Those factors help explain why the airline was assessing a new long- and medium-distance aircraft at that time, but JAL did not publish how much weight each factor carried.
What the public record cannot tell us about the contest
The announcement and investor presentation do not reveal negotiated prices, confidential commercial offers, weighted evaluation scores or one feature that tipped the decision. It is therefore not possible to say from these sources that a particular price, cabin detail, engine choice or performance advantage “won” the competition. The grounded explanation is that JAL needed to renew aging aircraft and selected the A350 after a broad assessment of operational, economic, passenger and environmental criteria.

How the decision played out in service
JAL recorded the A350-900’s entry into service in September 2019 on the Haneda–Fukuoka route, describing it as the first domestic introduction of the A350-900. The date aligned with the broad service-entry timetable JAL had announced in 2013. JAL’s aircraft history records the service launch.
In its fleet information dated March 31, 2026, JAL listed 17 A350-900s and 11 A350-1000s, for 28 A350s total. It also listed nine Boeing 777-300ERs in its large-aircraft group. The snapshot shows the A350 had become a substantial part of the fleet, but it does not support saying JAL had eliminated all 777s. JAL’s fleet reference provides the dated counts.

The A350 order also formed part of a wider market story: Airbus reported more than 1,500 A350-family orders from 67 customers at the end of January 2026. That is Airbus’s own tally, not an independent measure of airline performance or proof of why JAL selected the aircraft. Airbus’s order announcement gives the figure in the context of a later customer order.
