If Starlink is slow or keeps dropping, first check the Starlink app for alerts, then determine whether the problem affects one device or your whole connection. That distinction helps separate a Wi-Fi or device issue from trouble with the dish, router, weather, equipment, or network congestion. Work through the checks below before buying replacement hardware.
Start with the Starlink app and identify the scope
- Check for alerts. Open the Starlink app and look for service, outage, obstruction, or hardware alerts. Use its obstruction tool to see whether trees, buildings, poles, debris, or foliage are blocking the dish’s view. See Starlink’s obstruction guidance.
- Test more than one device. If just one phone, computer, or TV is affected, begin with that device and its Wi-Fi connection. If several devices are slow or disconnecting, investigate the router, dish view, weather, cabling, and congestion.
- Record when it happens. Note the date and time, weather, affected devices, and any app alerts. This makes it easier to spot patterns and gives Support useful information if the problem persists.
If only one device is slow
Check Wi-Fi distance and band
Move the device close to the Starlink router and test again. Starlink says 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches farther, while 5 GHz can be faster but works best nearer the router. If performance improves nearby, the issue may be the local wireless link rather than the satellite connection.
Compare Wi-Fi with the internet connection
Where available, use the Starlink app’s Advanced Speed Test to compare device-to-router, router-to-internet, and device-to-internet results. A poor device-to-router result points toward a local Wi-Fi bottleneck; test close to the router and on 5 GHz before concluding Starlink itself is slow. For a meaningful comparison, keep the device, location, Wi-Fi band, time, and weather consistent.
Temporarily turn off a VPN
Disable the VPN briefly and repeat the same test. If performance changes, the VPN or its route may be involved. Turn it back on after the comparison if you rely on it for privacy or work.
#1 Best Overall
- 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
- 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
- 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
- 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
- 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.
If several devices are slow or disconnecting
Inspect the cables and connections
Check for loose connectors, visible damage, sharp kinks, or exposure to weather. Do not assume a generic Ethernet cable can replace the kit-specific cable that connects the dish. For an Ethernet connection to the Starlink router described in its slow-speed troubleshooting guidance, Starlink recommends Cat5e or higher; a lower-rated Ethernet cable may limit speeds on that connection.
Isolate third-party networking equipment
Temporarily remove third-party routers, mesh nodes, and switches, then retest using the Starlink-provided equipment. If results improve, reconnect the extra equipment one piece at a time to identify where performance changes. Starlink’s third-party router guidance also discusses performance at busy network times.

- QUICK SETUP: Plug-and-play installation gets you connected rapidly, with intuitive configuration for both home and office environments
Check the dish’s view and location
Review the app’s obstruction scan. Trees and other obstructions can interrupt service, and the view can change as foliage grows, debris accumulates, the dish moves, or snow builds up. If the scan identifies a blockage, consider a clearer location or a compatible mount or pole to raise the dish. Do not climb onto a roof, tower, or tree if the work is unsafe; use a qualified installer where needed.
Account for severe weather
Starlink says significant weather can degrade service by attenuating radio signals; moderate to heavy rain, snow, or hail can cause momentary dropouts. Some weather-related degradation should clear after conditions pass. After a storm, inspect the accessible hardware and connections for damage. Starlink’s weather guidance explains the impact of conditions on service.

Check whether slowdowns follow a time-of-day pattern
Compare tests taken under similar conditions at different times. If performance repeatedly worsens during busy periods but improves off-peak, network congestion may contribute; Starlink notes that speeds can decrease during peak network times. One Starlink article describes peak hours as typically 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time, but that is guidance from that article, not a universal schedule. Do not judge service from a single test or apply a speed benchmark that ignores your location and plan; Starlink directs users to local availability-map expectations.
