Neither service is best for every home. In the U.S., 5G home internet is often the simpler, lower-cost choice when a provider accepts your address and the gateway gets a strong, steady signal. Starlink is worth considering when terrestrial choices are limited and you can install its satellite terminal with a suitable view of the sky. Check both services at your exact address and compare the full offer and real-world performance—not headline speeds alone.

How Starlink and 5G home internet reach your home

Starlink delivers broadband through satellites to a user terminal at your property. Its kit includes the terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply and mount. The terminal needs a suitable placement and exposure; see Starlink’s equipment and service specifications.

5G home internet is fixed wireless: a provider-supplied gateway connects to a carrier’s cellular network and shares that connection with devices in your home. Verizon describes its service as using 5G Ultra Wideband coverage, while T-Mobile describes Home Internet as fixed wireless on its 5G network (Verizon; T-Mobile).

Check availability and signal at your address

Use each provider’s address checker; general 5G coverage does not mean a carrier will offer home internet at your location. Even if a gateway is eligible, indoor signal and local network conditions affect how well it performs. The FCC explains that fixed broadband availability is reported by location, while mobile coverage is modeled and does not show indoor availability (FCC map guidance).

Starlink availability and plan options also vary by location. Confirm eligibility and the offered plan during checkout, rather than assuming that a service available nearby can be ordered at your home.

Compare speed claims carefully

Starlink’s specifications list typical overall user downloads of 25–220 Mbps, uploads of 5–20 Mbps and land latency of 25–60 ms. The same page gives different ranges for plan types: Standard (Fixed) is listed at 25–100 Mbps down and 5–10 Mbps up; Priority (Fixed) at 40–220 Mbps down and 8–25 Mbps up; both list 25–60 ms latency. Starlink says results vary by location, time of day and plan precedence, and that speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed (Starlink specifications).

Verizon and T-Mobile likewise warn that 5G home internet performance varies with local cellular-network conditions. Their pages do not establish a single speed for every eligible address. These provider disclosures are not a controlled comparison, so they cannot tell you which service will be faster in your home. Look for an applicable trial or guarantee and, if possible, assess service during the busy hours when your household needs it most.

Compare the actual monthly cost, not just the headline

The following U.S. prices were displayed on provider pages accessed in 2026; offers can change and may depend on address or eligibility. Treat them as a snapshot, not a promise of what you will pay.

What can make either connection less reliable?

Starlink: placement, congestion and plan

Starlink needs a suitable place for its terminal, so the property and installation options matter. Its specifications say performance can fall during high usage and can vary with location and plan precedence. Review current installation guidance and service terms before ordering.

5G home internet: indoor signal and network conditions

A gateway’s location and the cellular signal reaching it affect performance. Carriers also disclose that network conditions and management can affect speeds. For example, AT&T says rare congestion may lead to a substantial temporary slowdown for at least 30 minutes; its Internet Air page lists limited availability and a $55/month starting price subject to taxes, fees and terms (AT&T Internet Air). That is an example of a carrier-specific caveat, not a rule that applies to every 5G service.

Which service fits your situation?

  • Consider 5G home internet if a provider confirms your address, the gateway receives a strong and consistent signal, and the eligible total price suits your budget.
  • Consider Starlink if suitable wired or fixed-wireless choices are limited, Starlink accepts your address, and you can place the terminal appropriately at the quoted monthly cost.
  • Compare both before deciding if both are available. Weigh upload speed, latency, peak-hour consistency, network-management terms, equipment placement, trial or guarantee rules, and total price alongside download claims.

The FCC’s 2026 report discusses satellite broadband capacity and limitations and reports that satellite service trails most fixed wireless providers in rural areas in its cited comparisons. That is broad regulatory context, not a controlled Starlink-versus-5G home test; it cannot predict the result at a particular address (FCC 26-55).
