Infineon’s 200 mm silicon-carbide (SiC) production matters because it can put more chips on each wafer and help the company scale power-device manufacturing. Villach, Austria, began releasing customer products made with the technology in early 2025; Kulim, Malaysia, is converting SiC production from 150 mm wafers. The effort sits alongside, but is distinct from, Dresden, Germany’s new 300 mm power-and-analog fab. Together, the sites are meant to support demand from electric vehicles, renewable energy, grids and AI data centers.

What 200 mm means for chip production

The measurement is the wafer’s diameter. A 200 mm wafer is wider than a 150 mm wafer and has substantially more surface area. If the chip design and manufacturing process allow it, that area can hold more individual dies, or chips. Producing more dies on each wafer can help spread fixed processing costs across more units and increase capacity.

That is a manufacturing-scale advantage, not a guarantee of a particular output or cost reduction. Die size, usable wafer area, yields, process complexity and production volumes all affect the result. Infineon has not published a general die-count or cost multiplier for this specific 200 mm SiC program, so a precise percentage gain should not be assumed.

Wafer size is also not a product feature a customer sees in the finished chip. It is one lever manufacturers use to balance capacity, investment and cost. Infineon’s 2025 annual report notes that its separate 300 mm thin-wafer power technology can deliver significantly lower costs and capital investment than 200 mm production, underscoring that the best wafer size depends on the process and technology.

Where Infineon’s 200 mm SiC production fits

Villach, Austria: customer products released

In February 2025, Infineon said it was releasing its first customer products made with advanced 200 mm SiC wafer technology from Villach. The products target high-voltage uses including renewable-energy systems, rail and electric vehicles. SiC power devices are used where efficient handling and switching of high power matters, including EVs, fast charging, trains and renewable-energy equipment.

Kulim, Malaysia: conversion from 150 mm

Infineon said in February 2025 that Kulim’s conversion from 150 mm to 200 mm SiC production was on track. Its third module was preparing for high-volume production, with the ramp aligned to demand. That is a status report from that date, not confirmation that the module has since reached high-volume output.

Kulim’s plan builds on the site’s existing production base and 200 mm infrastructure. Infineon describes the site as having compound-semiconductor synergies with Villach, but public details in the cited material do not provide site-by-site output, yields or a timetable for the entire conversion.

Dresden, Germany: a separate 300 mm expansion

Dresden’s Smart Power Fab is not another 200 mm SiC line. It is a 300 mm facility for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies. It opened on 2 July 2026 after a €5 billion investment. Infineon says the fab will double Dresden’s capacity for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies and create 1,000 direct jobs.

This critical feature protects sensitive semiconductor surfaces from ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) damage, ensuring the integrity of your wafers during transport and cleanroom processing.
  • ULTRA-LOW PARTICLE GENERATION: Manufactured in a controlled cleanroom environment using high-purity materials, this isolation paper exhibits exceptionally low particle shedding. It acts as a reliable barrier against micro-contamination, maintaining the strict cleanliness standards required for semiconductor fabrication.
  • SUPERIOR CUSHIONING & SCRATCH RESISTANCE: Features a smooth, non-abrasive surface texture that provides a soft cushioning layer between wafers. This effectively prevents micro-scratches, edge chipping, and surface defects caused by friction during stacking, shipping, or automated equipment handling.
  • VERSATILE SEMICONDUCTOR HANDLING: Ideal for a wide range of applications including wafer storage, inter-batch transport, FOUP/FOSB loading, and cleanroom processing. Compatible with various semiconductor materials, ensuring safe and reliable isolation across your entire production line.

How Villach, Kulim and Dresden are connected

Infineon’s 2025 annual report describes Villach and Dresden as a “One Virtual Fab.” The sites use common processes, equipment, automation and digitalization concepts, and the company says this allows it to shift production volumes between them when needed. This is an operating model intended to add flexibility; it does not mean the fabs make identical products or that every production line can be transferred interchangeably.

The company describes similar compound-semiconductor synergies between Villach and Kulim. Read together, the sites form a coordinated manufacturing network: Villach and Kulim are central to the SiC expansion, while Dresden adds 300 mm power and analog/mixed-signal capacity and shares a manufacturing model with Villach. Infineon says the Dresden investment strengthens European microelectronics supply chains; shared operations and the ability to shift some volumes between Villach and Dresden add another source of flexibility.

  • 6N silicon (Si ≥ 99.9999%) ensures optimal performance in semiconductor manufacturing and other high-tech applications.
  • Lightweight devise at 79 grams makes it easy to handle and integrate into experiments or electronic components.
  • Crystalline silicon provides excellent semiconductor properties, making it suitable for electrical and electronic industries.
  • Versatile usage in high-temperature-resistant materials, alloys, and construction, catering to a wide range of industrial applications.

What the expansion could mean for EVs, energy and AI

  • Electric vehicles and rail: Infineon’s initial 200 mm SiC customer products from Villach are aimed at high-voltage applications that include EVs and trains. SiC devices also serve charging and other power-conversion equipment.
  • Renewable energy and grids: Efficient power conversion is important in renewable generation and the equipment that connects generation to the grid. Infineon identifies these areas among the intended markets for its power technologies.
  • AI data centers: Dresden’s power switches and analog/mixed-signal components are intended for systems including AI-data-center power supplies. The fab adds manufacturing capacity; it is not itself a data center or a guarantee of supply to a particular operator.
  • Industrial systems: Infineon also identifies broader industrial applications for Dresden’s output, alongside vehicles and energy infrastructure.

The business rationale is that electrification and digital infrastructure both require equipment to control, convert and distribute electricity. SiC expansion and Dresden’s broader power-and-analog capacity address related demand, but they are different technologies and production programs rather than one interchangeable fab build-out.

What the investment figures do—and do not—show

The €5 billion Dresden figure is Infineon’s investment announcement for that fab, while the 1,000 figure refers to direct jobs associated with the project. Infineon has also cited an experts/ZVEI estimate of a 1:6 ecosystem job effect. That is an attributed estimate of wider employment impact, not a count of jobs already measured or created.

In a 2023 shareholder letter, Infineon projected around €7 billion in annual revenue potential by the end of the decade from its SiC expansion and 200 mm conversions, supported by long-term automotive and renewable-energy agreements. This is company guidance made in 2023, not realized revenue, a guaranteed result or a forecast of profit. The figure covers the broader expansion rather than the output of one fab alone.

For readers assessing the business significance, the useful distinction is between announced investment and operating results. Investment, jobs and capacity plans show the scale and direction of the commitment; they do not establish production yields, cost per chip, actual sales or the return earned on that investment. The cited public information does not supply those performance measures for the 200 mm program.

What to watch as the fabs ramp

  • Customer qualification and shipments: Villach’s initial customer-product release is a meaningful step, but it does not establish the volume or pace of later production.
  • Kulim’s module status: The February 2025 update said Module 3 was preparing for high-volume production. Subsequent verified production updates would clarify how the conversion has progressed.
  • Production economics: Die output, yield and cost-per-wafer data would help quantify the benefits of the 200 mm transition; the company has not published a general multiplier for this program in the cited material.
  • Demand and realized revenue: The 2023 revenue-potential projection should be judged against later sales and customer demand, rather than treated as revenue already secured or earned.
